Reported cases officially. Please change them to red. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.205.83.180 (talk) 08:56, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Choose different color scheme?

What about choosing a different color scheme? The red and black seems a little extreme. I agree that Wikipedia is not an emergency system or a health care provider (people shouldn't be getting their news entirely from here), but I feel that slowly making the world black as deaths accumulate is not socially responsible and adds to the overall feeling of panic. Now 2/3 of North America is a dire black and Canada is a deep red. Could we change the black to blue? Purple? Green? Hdstubbs (talk) 14:37, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

I like the current color sheme.. it looks like the German flag jaja ;-) -- Grochim (talk) 14:59, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Black makes me think that everyone in that country has died - maybe I've been playing Pandemic II too much. It certainly isn't the best colour scheme. Smurfy 15:08, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Good, I'm glad someone else plays Pandemic II (I've been feeling guilty about it.) Do we agree that we should change the color scheme? I don't know how to do this or I would do it. Hdstubbs (talk) 17:39, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
I also agree. Black seems to be too threatening. Alhen ♐... 18:05, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
I say leave it be, more threatening? Give me a break, also is the fact that about 5 other maps would have to be changed as well if anyone did change the black.Knowledgekid87 18:58, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
I understand that five maps have to be changed, but if we make the change then it is done. As more countries add deaths I still think that black is the wrong color for this map. I'm not convinced by 'give me a break' as a reason to not change it :). Hdstubbs (talk) 03:21, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
I like my seven colour scheme suggestion (grey - no reports ; blue - false reports ; yellow - suspected cases ; orange - confirmed cases ; pink - suspected cases + suspected deaths ; dark red - confirmed cases + suspected deaths ; violet - deaths with victims confirmed to be infected) 76.66.202.139 (talk) 03:56, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
Looks like someone is using "blue" to represent the source area of the outbreak... File:H1N1 Norte América Veracruz.svg 76.66.202.139 (talk) 05:55, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

These colors are an insult to Germany. Kjidel (talk) 11:33, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

As a German I don't think it's an insult. -- Grochim (talk) 15:12, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
We should keep the current colors. There are sixteen maps total, one of which is in twenty eight languages. When I add it up, we have forty-four things to change and half of us don't even know how to change them. If we wanted them changed, the time to do so was last week when there wasn't so much work already done. 96.18.217.236 (talk) 12:15, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
I completely agree, most people have also gotten used to the colors. The fact that they are the colors of the German flag might also be random. It is not an insult, saying so is just ridicolous. I think the colors should stay, personally I've created two maps, and edited three. I doubt changing the colors would help out at all, it would create more confusion. Notelitten (talk) 14:03, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Just because it is a lot of work is not a good reason to have a less effective article. If we change the colors I can look up the colors in Babelfish. This article is getting a lot of traffic and we have many people working on it. I think we can spare some time to have one of the key pieces of the article, the map, as useful to people visiting the page as possible. Hdstubbs (talk) 12:35, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
Lets leave this discussion with this note, most people who edit do not know how to change the maps. If someone wants to spend the long time and effort going and changing ALL the maps, they can do so provided a new color scheme is thought up first and agreed on.Knowledgekid87 14:45, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Just wanted to add my 2 cents with thinking that the black for confirmed deaths is a bit unorthodox with regards to the color scheme. Painting the entire US black because of one death due to H1N1 looks strange. Do these things get voted on if there are enough people who request a change? Just asking...

GaussianCopula (talk) 20:40, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Please, stop changing colours

Each time someone change the colours, the legend must be changed in 28 languages. 83.49.224.108 (talk) 17:44, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't want to make more work for anyone but I really think that changing from black is for the best. It looks better and, more importantly, it doesn't look like we are slowly destroying all life on Earth. Can we come to a consensus on this and then stick with it? It doesn't have to be deep red? What about red for death (serious but no as threatening, green for confirmed and yellow for suspected? Hdstubbs (talk) 18:22, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Support Hdstubbs's suggestion, for what it's worth. YeshuaDavid (talk) 22:05, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Support this suggestion as well. I never liked black for the deaths. I preferred the very dark red that was used at one point, but I recognize that it would be difficult to distinguish against the bright red if they have to be used together in Europe. I'd agree to Hdstubbs's particular color scheme, although I'm not married to it; I just want to get rid of the black. --DavidK93 (talk) 13:00, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Update Perú, Costa Rica, Ireland, South Korea and Hong Kong

Perú said it's case was finally negative, Costa Rica, Ireland and South Korea have initial positives not fully confirmed yet, so they should be yellow, and Hong Kong has a confirmed laboratory case, so it should be red. Can someone fix this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by DePalma (talkcontribs) 19:01, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

We put yellow for probation. Stop coloring South Korea, Ireland, and Costa Rica red until it is confirmed. You cannnot make assumption over something hasn't yet confirmed. Besides, color Russia to yellow. Kadrun (talk) 19:08, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

I didn't colour anything,I don't know how to do it. Actually I agree with you. No cases have been proven for South Korea, Costa Rica and Ireland. They just have initial positives that need final laboratory confirmation, so they should be yellow for the moment. And Peru had a previous initial positive that turned out to be negative, soy it shouldn't be red either. Please someone fix it so the map will be more accurate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DePalma (talkcontribs) 19:20, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

I was supporting your idea, not talking to you, don't worry. :) By the way, I understand the mistake over Ireland and Costa Rica since they were once red, but coloring South Korea was completely wrong. Kadrun (talk) 19:23, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Now South Korea has confirmed the infection. You may color South Korea red. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kadrun (talkcontribs) 01:53, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Impression of accuracy

This map gives the impression of accurate worldwide information regarding the spread of swine flu. However, it is in fact a collection of media reports and detections by health agencies of varying responsiveness and capabilities. This means that there are probably serious biases in the map (for instance most of Africa has no confirmed cases which I find highly suspect). A casual reader is likely to miss these subtleties. I recommend modifying the key to include the caveat: "This map is not taken from epidemiological data and so may suffer from one or more measurement biases." Barnaby dawson (talk) 08:24, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Or perhaps this wording would be better: "This map is not based on epidemiological data and so may suffer from one or more measurement biases." Barnaby dawson (talk) 08:46, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

China/Hong Kong

Shouldn't China be red on this map? Hong Kong has confirmed its first case, but since 1997 Hong Kong is considered part of China even though it has a different government. --Tocino 17:24, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

China has also a confirmed case. See [1]. -download | sign! 21:22, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
Even though Hong Kong is technicially considered a part of China they have basically separate government and social networks. An outbreak in China is VERY different from an outbreak in Hong Kong. They have separate health care systems, government administrations, societies, and passports. This article is referring to the Hong Kong case not to an additional case in China. So only Hong Kong should be colored red not just China. --62.69.130.82 (talk) 10:03, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
As a Hong Kong people, now I urge the guy who colour whole China in red to decolourise China back right now, that "source" have no words mentioning China mainland have confirmed case, also if China mainland have cases reported the news here don't emit nothing. It is quite a misleading especially in the zh-wiki --Ryusakura (talk) 14:22, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Please paint Hong Kong in red. Leaving it gray is misleading. ~AH1(TCU) 19:57, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

While I think colouring all China a bit overdramatic, we can't have two systems in play here; French Guiana is geographically and culturally, if not politically, seperate from France, for example, yet that's coloured red. YeshuaDavid (talk) 22:04, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

That's silly. The reasoning equals we just do. The point of this map is to track an epidemic, not to categorize political boundaries. There is no reason for French Guiana to be red if there is no cases of swine flu there. WP:Ignore all Rules--62.69.130.82 (talk) 12:33, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
French Guiana is a fundamental part of France. If we are going to include Alaska and Hawaii, even though there have been zero flu cases in either, then logic dictates we include French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, and Guadeloupe. If the point of the map is to "track an epidemic" then begin by coding out Alaska and Hawaii. --Golbez (talk) 23:47, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
It would be better if Alaska and Hawaii were not colored, but at least they are on the same continent. If the point is not to track and epidemic then what is the point? But the original comment was about Hong Kong and China and they are the not the same, it is not like Hong Kong is a state in China, it is a separate political entity.--Hdstubbs (talk) 16:31, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
I agree. Hong Kong is separate in many ways, while still being at least nominally a part of the country. --Golbez (talk) 20:52, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Could someone colour Hong Kong red, at least? Or if it's too small to be on the map, make a red circle at the approximate position. (It might also be a good idea to use a larger World map.)--Roentgenium111 (talk) 18:43, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Suggestions for image

Hi. I suggest using a small coloured circle, but one big enough to show up on the size of the image used for the main article, for the countries/special regions that have no islands or areas not smaller than Jamaica, which have either confirmed (red) cases or suspected (orange) ones. This is because those countries are hard to identify on even the main-sized version, especially Singapore. The circle should be centered on the country, or on the capital city if it is an archipelago, in addition to colouring in any parts of the country/region visible on the map at all. I think the general consensus here is not to colour all of Mainland China in red, so a red small circle should suit the purpose. It may seem misleading, for example, to have French Guiana coloured in red, but I suggest leaving in gray only the dependencies of a country too small to show up on the map and therefore otherwise would require a small circle. Any opinions? Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 20:04, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

French Guiana is not a dependency of France any more than Alaska is a dependency of the USA. --Golbez (talk) 16:23, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
I like the idea of using a dot for very small regions, including Hong Kong as separate from China. I think that exclaved regions should be dealt with separately. For example, the coloration of French Guyana in red makes it appear that there is a confirmed case of swine flu in that part of South America, which is completely inaccurate. Thus, French Guyana should not be red. In the case of Alaska and Hawaii, coloring them black makes it seem as if deaths have occurred there, but they haven't. Basically, I think anyone reading the map will parse the color of each independent region individually, regardless of what the political connections are between them. And I really think that most people aren't even aware of most of those political connections; I sincerely doubt that a majority of the world population knows that a small region in South America is part of France. Thus, I think that each exclaved region should be colored to reflect cases in the exclave, not in the mother country. --DavidK93 (talk) 13:19, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
I agree the point of the map is to track the epidemic not to cover who owns what politically. We should have them separate especially when there is a great physical and/or cultural divide between two nations such as France and French Guiana. I like circles a lot better. As long as we are making the circles can we change the colors?--Hdstubbs (talk) 16:45, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
France and French Guiana are the same nation. And I agree, I would much prefer to exclude exclaves; my only point was, if we are including Alaska, we must include French Guiana, Reunion, Martinique, and Guadeloupe as well. Better would be a map that only show states/provinces where the flu has been found; even better would be dots showing the exact locations, if known, without even shading in the country (that could be useful for a thumbnail though) --Golbez (talk) 16:23, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
