English: This micrograph depicts Bacteroides fragilis ss. vulgatus bacteria cultured in blood agar medium for 48 hours. – Gram-negative B. fragilis, though a commensal bacteria that normally lives in the human gastrointestinal tract this organism can become pathogenic under circumstances involving disruption of the normal intestinal mucosa such as trauma, or surgery.
