Biography

[edit]

Faezah Mohammed Hassan grew up in the UAE. Her art studio is located in her home in Sharjah, the city that inspires most of her artworks. Although being a self-taught artist, who discovered a passion for art in the later years, her paintings caught the attention of the audience, not just in the United Arab Emirates, but across the globe. Her work is deeply influenced by the German orienatal artist Gustav Bauernfeind (1848–1904). At first she started experimenting the techniques of impressionism, but it's her mentor Mahmoud Azadnia who helped her find her own artistic expression - a unique Arab realism. In terms of that, she truly respects the work of the 19th century French artist Gustave Courbet. She likes to paint outdoor places such as deserts, traditional Arab houses, Emirate women with the traditional Emirati burqa. The dominant colors and shades on most of her artworks is ochre. In her interview for the Gulf Today, she stated:

I love ochre colour, with some reddish pigment - which is one of the world’s oldest pigments. I feel it symbolises happiness, warmth and the earth itself. I see this colour all over the UAE such as in the desert, in architecture, traditional jewellery, the sun, traditional embroidery, in spices, in Emirati food[2]

Faezeh is famous for her celebrity portraits. The most famous is the portrait of Bodour bint Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi and of Monica Belucci, (inspired by John Singer Sargent's portrait “Madame X”), a portrait that won this year's Peru Bienal.[3] She is also famous or plein-air-art, where she incorporates vibrant colours and dynamic outdoor light scenes that mirror the country's warmth and happiness through the beauty of its landscapes and traditions. She received a special mention at the Euro Expo Art,[4] organized in the NeoArtGallery in the setting of Vernice Art Fair in Forlì (Italy).

So far she participated in many UAE and international exhibitions (virtual and physical). She especially left a mark in the UAE art scene by participating in the exhibition that celebrates Emirati Women's Day,[5] as her art celebrates the Emirati women, emphesizing their role in preservation of the Emirati cultural heritage.
