Yvette Kaplan. First American woman to direct an animated feature film.[1]
Yvette Kaplan (born Yvette Rosenberg)[2] was born in New York in 1955 and grew up in Brooklyn.[3] After high school, she attended the School of Visual Arts[4], studying under Howard Beckerman. She has worked as an animator, producer, and director on a number of shows for television and film. Yvette Kaplan is the first American woman to direct animation[5] for a feature film, Beavis & Butthead Do America[6] in 1996.[7] She also worked as a director for the Nickelodeon's popular Doug(1991) animated series and Zack and Quack (2012).
Kaplan began her career at a little known New York studio called Teletactics, where she worked with animators Dan Haskett, Tom Sito, and John Canemaker. In the 1970s and 80s, she animated for commercial television at a variety of Manhattan studios, including Broadcast Arts. In 1991, Kaplan was hired to direct episodes of Doug for Jumbo Pictures[8]. She began at MTV Animation studios in 1994, directing episodes of Beavis and Butthead.
Kaplan now lives in Los Angeles as a freelance director and producer.
