Draft:Winter Legends

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winter Legends is a musical composition for solo piano and orchestra by the English composer Sir Arnold Bax[1]. The work is dedicated to the composer's long-time mistress Harriet Cohen.

The work is scored for flutes, piccolo, oboes, cor anglais, clarinets in b-flat, bassoon, contrabassoon, horns, trumpets, trombones, tuba, strings and percussion and with an extensive solo piano part.

The work consists of 4 movements:

  1. Allegro
  2. Lento, molto espressivo
  3. Molto moderato, allegro molto
  4. Epilogue: Molto cantabilie

The work was composed rapidly in 1929-30.Apparently the work was originally dedicated to the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, but that dedication was crossed out by Cohen, after which she inserted her own name.[2]

The composer provided extensive program notes for the work.

A Closer Look at the Score

[edit]

The work begins with the introduction by the side drum of the main rhythmic cell that reappears throughout the work:

After which introduction, we are presented a frenetic opening solo for piano:

Bax was adamant about the work not being strictly speaking a piano concerto. The composer envisaged a enriched orchestral experience, as is evident in the next passage which appears shortly after the previous excerpt:
