The William & Mary Tribe Line is the drumline for the College of William & Mary and is a subset of The William & Mary Pep Band. It is an informal, student-run ensemble that is open for any enrolled students to join. The Tribe Line performs alongside the Pep Band at home football and basketball games, as well as several other special events throughout the year.

History

[edit]

The William & Mary Pep Band has had a drumline since its inception in 1996[1], but it was not officially named "The Tribe Line" until 2023. This was also the first year a Drum Captain was appointed to the executive board of the Pep Band. This revival and branding of the drumline occurred as a result of a membership boom in Fall 2023 that more than tripled the size of the drumline, which was previously on the verge of extinction.

Due to the laid-back nature of the group and its notoriously old and faulty equipment, the motto of the Tribe Line quickly became: "Held Together With Stick Tape Since 2023", with a secondary motto being "See Us Rollin'".

Leadership

[edit]

The Tribe Line is officially led by the Drum Captain(s). This position can be filled by one or two members of the drumline who are appointed by the previous Drum Captain(s) to serve as a member of the Pep Band's executive board. This position is responsible for organizing rehearsals, selecting repertoire, and guiding the drumline towards its goals. The first Drum Captain was appointed in 2023.
