Wahid Kovli (1970 – February 3, 2017) was a prominent Kurdish military commander who played a crucial role in leading the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, especially in the fight against ISIS. Known for his courage, leadership, and strategic expertise, Kovli led multiple operations, most notably during the November 2015 Sinjar Offensive, as well as in key battles in Telskuf, Sinjar, Mosul Dam, and the Nineveh Plains. His contributions to the defense of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq during the ISIS insurgency made him a widely respected figure in both Kurdish military and civilian circles.[1][2]

Early Life

[edit]

Wahid Kovli was born in 1970 in the village of Kovli, in the Duhok Governorate, Kurdistan Region, Iraq. He was the son of Majeed, and one of ten children. Growing up in a politically turbulent environment, Kovli was deeply influenced by the Kurdish struggle for autonomy and independence. At a young age, he joined the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, dedicating his life to the cause of Kurdish liberation and the defense of the Kurdistan Region.

Military Career

[edit]

Early Engagement and the 1991 Uprising

[edit]

Kovli's military service began during the 1991 Kurdish Uprising against Saddam Hussein’s regime. He actively participated in various battles alongside the Peshmerga, defending Kurdish autonomy after the uprising, despite its eventual failure. His actions during this time earned him early recognition for his bravery and tactical skills.

Rise Through the Ranks

[edit]

In 1999, Kovli became a member of the Sven's Movement, a Kurdish political and military organization. He was instrumental in helping strengthen the Peshmerga forces during this period and began gaining recognition for his leadership and military acumen.

War Against ISIS

[edit]

In 2014, as ISIS began its rapid advance across Iraq, Kovli was appointed as the commander of the Anti-Terrorism Unit in Duhok. In this role, he led his forces through several pivotal battles to defend the Kurdistan Region. Notable engagements included the Battle of Mosul, the Sinjar Offensive, and the defense of key towns such as Telskuf and Sinjar. Kovli played a pivotal role in retaking territory from ISIS, personally overseeing operations that led to the capture of 29 ISIS fighters and the death of more than 150 ISIS militants.[3]

Kovli was wounded six times throughout the course of the conflict but continued to lead from the front lines. His commitment to the fight against ISIS was evident when he personally took down an ISIS gunman during the Battle of Mosul after a close-range encounter.[4]

One of the most significant moments in his military career came during the November 2015 Sinjar Offensive, where he led Peshmerga forces to liberate the town of Sinjar from ISIS control. This operation marked a crucial victory for Kurdish forces and helped cut off a key ISIS supply route.[5]

Death

[edit]

Wahid Kovli passed away on February 3, 2017, at the age of 47, from a stroke in Duhok. His death was a tremendous loss to the Kurdish military and the broader Kurdish community. He is remembered as a courageous leader, a martyr, and a symbol of resistance against tyranny.[6][7][8].[9]

Legacy

[edit]

Wahid Kovli’s legacy as a hero of the Kurdish resistance endures. He is remembered for his bravery, leadership, and his unwavering dedication to protecting the people of Kurdistan. His military contributions, especially during the battle against ISIS, have made him a revered figure in the region, and he is remembered posthumously for his selflessness and sacrifice in the defense of his homeland.
