Tom Hegna (born on July 20, 1961, in Glenwood, Minnesota) is an American economist, author, and speaker known for his work in retirement planning and financial education.

Early life and

Hegna was born on July 20, 1961, in Glenwood, Minnesota. Raised in a middle-class family, his parents were both educators.[citation needed] He attended North Dakota State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in economics.[1] He then joined the United States Army and served for over 22 years, including both active duty and reserve service, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2006. During his military career, he held positions in Military Intelligence and Electronic Warfare, including Battalion Commander, and received commendations, such as the Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal.[citation needed]

Hegna began his financial services career at MetLife in 1988, where he achieved success as an agent and qualified for the Million Dollar Roundtable in his first year. He later held roles such as National Marketing Manager for Variable Life and Managing Partner of MetLife's Chandler, Arizona office. In 1996, Hegna joined New York Life,[citation needed] and was later promoted to the position of First Vice President.[2][3] He retired in 2011.[citation needed]

After leaving New York Life, Hegna established his own firm, tomhegna.com, focusing on retirement education and financial consulting. He has since trained over 300,000 financial professionals worldwide,[citation needed] and authored books on retirement planning, including Paychecks and Playchecks, Retirement Income Masters, and Don’t Worry, Retire Happy. His PBS show, Don’t Worry, Retire Happy, aired in over 80 million homes.[4]

His work emphasizes strategies for managing financial risks in retirement, such as market volatility, inflation, and longevity. His work is featured on platforms like Fox Business and CNBC, and he has spoken at major events, including NAIFA, NAILBA, MDRT, and GAMA.[citation needed]

Hegna is also a golfer and has won several championships, including the 2020 Club Championship and 2022 Senior Club Championship at Flagstaff Ranch Country Club.[citation needed]
