Timo Novotny (born 1973 in Böblingen) is an Austrian Filmmaker and Photographer.
Life and Work
[edit]Novotny studied Visual Media Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna under Peter Weibel from 1994 to 2000, graduating with distinction. Since 1997, he has worked as a freelance artist in photography and film.
His first short film, Wirehead (with Norbert Pfaffenbichler, 1996), was shown at around 30 international film festivals and won several awards, including the ZKM Media Art Award in Karlsruhe.
In 1999, he created Cargo, a short film that extended three music videos for the Sofa Surfers (band). This film was shown at around 35 film festivals and won multiple awards. Novotny has since been responsible for the artwork for the Sofa Surfers, including record and CD covers, as well as music videos and projections at live shows. Since the release of Sofa Surfers – The Red Album in 2005, he has been considered a band member.
In 2006, Novotny completed his first feature film, Life In Loops – A Megacities Rmx.[1]. The film is a remix of Michael Glawogger's documentary Megacities and was the first film remix to be re-released in cinemas as a 35 mm film, shown at over 60 film festivals, and awarded five prizes. It was notably awarded "Best Documentary" at the International Film Festival Karlovy Vary. Other festival appearances included the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival, Singapore International Film Festival, Kraków Film Festival, Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, and the Film Fest Ghent. In 2012, he premiered his second feature documentary, Trains of Thoughts, at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
In addition to music videos for the Sofa Surfers, Novotny has produced videos for Markus Kienzl, Bauchklang, Katika and I-Wolf. His cover artworks have been exhibited worldwide with the mobile design exhibition "Design Now Austria".[2] The experimental video Neon (with Nik Thoenen, 2002) was included in the collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Novotny's work has been featured in group exhibitions at festivals such as Viper (Basel), Sónar (Barcelona), Vienna Independent Shorts (Vienna), Ars Electronica (Linz), Venice Biennale (9th International Architecture Exhibition), and the Austrian Cultural Forum New York. His only solo exhibition to date was held at the KBB in Barcelona. He has curated at the transcinema festival in San Francisco, the Cimatics Festival in Brussels, and the Les Rencontres Audiovisuelles in Lille.
As a live performer (similar to a VJ), Novotny has appeared with the Sofa Surfers and individual band members in 27 countries, including performances at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, the 41st and 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the 33rd IFF Ghent, and the Arsenal cultural complex in Nizhny Novgorod. In 2003, he opened the Cinedays in Brussels, and in 2007, he performed a live remix of Life in Loops to open the IndieLisboa festival in Portugal. In 2012, he premiered Trains of Thoughts live at the Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale's 13th International Architecture Exhibition.
In Austria, his performances have included the Urban Art Forms Festival in Wiesen (with GusGus), the Klangturm in St. Pölten (1997), the Diagonale film festival in Graz (1999), Ars Electronica (1997 and 2003), Heimo Zobernig's "black box" at the Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz (2003), the opening of the Donaufestival in Korneuburg (2005), the opening of the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna (2008), the Vienna Burgtheater (2009), and the visualization of Hugo Wolf's Italienisches Liederbuch (2010).
