The Pain of Living Without My Mother

(This story begins the day I was born.)

I am Prasangya Adhikari. I was born on Kartik 17, 2067 B.S. in this strange world through my mother’s womb. My father, who used to work tirelessly in a soap factory throughout the night, came to meet me in the hospital with eyes red from exhaustion but a face glowing with happiness, resembling the moon. Despite working day and night, the soap factory paid my father only 1,000–2,000 rupees a month.

My mother had married my father at a very young age and moved in with him. My father saved every penny he could, enduring many hardships, and eventually brought my mother to Kathmandu. Now, let’s talk about the day I was born. After my birth, people from our village came to meet me. I had apparently given my mother a lot of trouble even while in her womb. After meeting me, everyone returned, but my grandparents decided they would visit only after my naming ceremony.

On the second day of my life, my mother’s milk dried up. I survived by being fed either by my aunt or with Lactogen. For 11 days, my routine consisted only of drinking Lactogen and causing trouble for my mother.

Days passed, and soon my naming ceremony arrived. For this occasion, my grandmother had ordered ghee to be brought. The naming ceremony went well, and it was time for my grandparents to leave.
