The Gehn Gehn Album is the debut studio album by Nigerian singer Orezi. It was released on September 9, 2015, by Sprisal Entertainment. The album features guest appearances from Timaya, 9ice, Ice Prince, Davido, Wizkid, M.I Abaga, Kiddominant and Flavour. Production was handled by Mystro, Dr. Amir, Dapiano, Kiddominant, Ex O, and Popito.
Composition
[edit]The Gehn Gehn Album blends various genres, including Afrobeat, pop, and highlife, with frequent use of contemporary dance rhythms. The album opens with "Asiko", which sets a personal tone, followed by "Maserati", a track with Afrobeat influences and a boastful theme. "Shuperu (Remix)", featuring Davido, combines memorable dance beats with club-ready energy, while "Low Low" includes playful lyrics about attraction. "Double Your Hustle" offers a more introspective message about ambition and perseverance. The album features multiple collaborations, such as "Big Something" with Flavour and M.I and "Ogede" with Timaya and Wizkid, which incorporate highlife and Afrobeat elements. "Sweet Yarinya" explores romantic themes, and "Selfie with You" blends modern courtship with minimalist lyricism.[1][2]
Singles
[edit]The album's lead single "Rihanna", was released on 18 February 2013. The Kiddominant-produced single was nominated for Best Reggae/Dancehall Single at the 2013 edition of the Headies and Most Gifted Ragga Dancehall at the 2014 edition of the Channel O Music Video Awards.[3][4] The second single off the album, "Maserati", features and was produced by Kiddominant. It was released on 14 October 2013 and was inspired by Nigerian musician Fela Kuti.[5] The third single "Zarokome" was released on 15 November 2013 alongside "You Garrit." "Zarokome" was produced by Kiddominant.[6] The album's fourth single, "Shoki", was released on 27 March 2014 and was produced by Popito.[7] The fifth single off The Gehn Gehn Album is the remix to Orezi's 2014 single "Shuperu." The Popito-produced remix features Davido and was released on 29 April 2015.[8] The sixth and final single "Yagolono" was released on 27 January 2016. It was produced by Popito.[9]
Critical reception
[edit]Joey Akan of Pulse Nigeria described The Gehn Gehn Album as a vibrant, pop-culture-inspired project that showcases Orezi’s hit-making ability and versatility across genres, though it lacks a cohesive concept. He highlighted standout tracks like “Big Something” featuring Flavour and M.I, and “Ogede” with Wizkid and Timaya, noting its “burst of colour” and “true African pop effervescence.” Akan rated the album 3/5, calling it “worth checking out.”[1] Sho and Tunde of Should You Bump This praised The Gehn Gehn Album for its hits and production, especially his synergy with Kiddominant, calling it “the truth.” Sho described the album as “filled with a lot of enjoyable hits, couple of fillers and banging production", while Tunde noted that Orezi took a “creatively safe” approach with “a couple of hit songs, a couple of decent songs, and a couple of songs that shouldn’t have made the album.” They rated it 3/5.[10] Oris Aigbokhaevbolo of Music in Africa described The Gehn Gehn Album as a well-produced, dance-ready project filled with stellar beats and big-name collaborations but criticized Orezi’s lack of a clear identity. Highlighting Orezi’s “fondness for flesh” and minimal songwriting, he noted, "Who needs an identity when you can make the people dance?".[2]
