The Brutalist (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album composed by Daniel Blumberg for the 2024 film The Brutalist by Brady Corbet. It will be digitally released by Milan Records on December 13, 2024.
Production
[edit]Composer Daniel Blumberg had written over two hours of music for the film.[1]
“ | The idea that it could kind of both be this intimate thing and then this quite like big percussive — some of the low end is from putting lots of microphones on the base of the piano. And with the brass as well, it's the same, it can be something that's very kind of soft and warm and then also very harsh. And a lot of the brass players, they are quite unique players like Axel Donner, who played the trumpet. It's making very peculiar sounds related to the construction. | ” |
— Daniel Blumberg[2] |
The soundtrack opens with three overtures, as Blumberg and Corbet wanted the first 10 minutes of the film to have continual music. The opening sequence of the film was choregraphed and filmed to Blumberg's demos of the overtures.[3][4]
Release
[edit]The soundtrack will be released digitally on December 13, 2024. Ahead of the soundtrack's release, the three overture tracks were released on November 22, 2024.[3]
Critical reception
[edit]Stephanie Zacharek of Time called the soundtrack "evocative, both exhilarating and unmooring at once".[5]
