Development

[edit]

In April 2023, it was reported that film producer S. Sashikanth would make his directorial debut with a sports drama film to be produced by his YNOT Studios banner.[1] Sashikanth had cast R. Madhavan and Siddharth in the lead roles, having previously worked with both the actors, and also cast Nayanthara as the female lead. The film would also mark Madhavan and Siddharth reuniting after Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004) and Rang De Basanti (2006).[2][3] On 12 April, the film was officially announced under the title Test.[4] A source from The Times of India added that unlike other cricket-based films, the film would focus on test cricket and hence the film was titled as such.[2]

The film will be based on an original story authored by Suman Kumar, who was known for writing The Family Man, and with whom Sashikanth would co-write the script.[5] Shortly after the announcement, Sashikanth revealed the preliminary crew members of the film, which included cinematographer Viraj Singh Gohil, editor T. S. Suresh, production designers Madhusudhan and Shweta Sabu Cyril, sports director Dhruv Panjani, action choreographer Dinesh Subbarayan, stylists Poornima Ramaswamy and Anu Vardhan, casting director Sharanya Subramanian and publicity designer Gopi Prasannaa.[5][6] Muthuramalingam was appointed as the executive producer of the film by the production house.[5][7]

Filming

[edit]

Principal photography commenced on 12 April, the same day as the film's announcement.[8][9] Filming for the first schedule began in Chennai, with the lead actors and Kaali Venkat being present.[10] On 9 May, the makers announced that Meera Jasmine would play an important role, marking her return to Tamil cinema after a 10-year hiatus.[11] She would be paired opposite Madhavan, after two decades since Run (2002) and Aayutha Ezhuthu.[12] By 17 June, Madhavan had completed filming his portions.[13] Filming for the second schedule began in Bengaluru, during late-September. On 8 January, Nayanthara had completed filming her portions,[14] as did Jasmine, who had completed filming her portions later.[15][16] Principal photography concluded on 31 January.[17][18]

Post-production

[edit]

The post-production process began on early February, shortly after filming wrapped.[16] OK Vijay serves as the visual effects supervisor, and sound design would be handled by Kunal Rajan and M. R. Rajakrishnan whereas Siddharth Sadashiv served as the sync sound recordist.[5]

Music

[edit]

The film's music is composed by playback singer Shakthisree Gopalan in her debut as music composer.[19]

Release

[edit]

In October 2024, it was reported that the film would surpass theatrical release, for a direct-to-streaming premiere.[20]
