Tôn Thất An 尊室安 (born July 16, 1970) is a Parisian-born Vietnamese composer, arranger, pianist, singer, and songwriter based in Taipei. With over 25 years of music composing experience, An's work spans contemporary dance, theatre, film, songs, as well as orchestral and chamber music. He is renowned for his innovative contributions across these diverse fields.

Early Life and Education

Tôn Thất An discovered his passion for music at the age of 5. His early years were marked by a deep curiosity and reflection on his experiences. Under the guidance of his father, composer Tôn Thât Tiêt, An studied piano and music theory at the Music Conservatory of Saint-Maur in France. This early exposure to music laid the foundation for his future career as a composer.

Music Composition and Performance

An has made significant contributions to various musical genres and formats. His career includes collaborations with choreographers and dancers such as Japanese choreographer Jo Kanamori and Taiwanese dancer Huang Yi. Notable projects include:

An’s collaboration with Kanamori led to a commission from the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, resulting in the composition of ‘The Legend of Thanh Giong’ (2013), which premiered[8] at the Berlin Philharmonie Hall.

As a singer-songwriter under the name Aaken, An has released several studio albums:

He also co-wrote and produced Taiwanese singer Sam Liao’s album ‘西部 (Forgotten West)’, earning him the Best Arranger award at the 30th Golden Melody Awards in 2019[9]

Film and Art Projects

An's passion for cinema has led him to collaborate with a new generation of Vietnamese filmmakers. His contributions include:

Internationally, he has worked on Naomi Kawase’s ‘True Mothers’ (2020), Edmund Yeo’s ‘Moonlight Shadow’ (2021), and Lee Yong Chao’s documentary ‘Rain in 2020’ (2021). An also directed his first short film, ‘Yet Untitled [redux]’ (2018).
