Shikainism
[edit]Shikainism is the spiritual belief system that centers around the worship of the two primordial deities Shikami (鹿神), the Deer Goddess, and Inekami (稲神), the Rice Goddess. According to the religion, these goddesses gave life to Earth, taught divine wisdom to mankind, and through their guidance keep the balance of nature. Through following the teachings of the goddesses, Shikainism emphasizes the importance of living in harmony with the forces of nature by respecting the land, animals, and natural cycles of life.
Core Beliefs
[edit]Shikainism holds that Earth and all living beings were created by Shikami and Inekami. The goddesses are known as protectors of nature who watch over the animal life and crops. As guardians of animals, especially the sacred deer, the Deer Goddess teaches humans to coexist with nature; in addition, the Rice Goddess, as the deity representing the land and rice, maintains the balance between users of the land.
Shikainism believes that as long as humanity recognizes not just the lineages and teachings of the goddesses but respect what they represent.
Creation in Shikainism
[edit]In Shikainism, Shikami and Inekami were the creators of everything that exists. This included the Earth and all creatures in it. First came the deer, gifted with divine protection and wisdom. Thus, the deer became the guardians of the forests and the natural world, keeping the balance between humanity and wildlife.
Then, they created the rice fields. Rice being life, rice being fortune, the Rice Goddess then blessed the crops so humans would have the food to live. Once the land was created, the goddesses brought forth humanity, and tasked them to keep balance amongst living things.
They also shared knowledge with the first people, teaching the people how to tend to rice paddies, hunt the right way, and live together with the beasts. This symbiosis guaranteed the richness and plenitude of the soil.
