From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Samuel D'Oyly (died 1748) was a English Vicar and translator.

Life

[edit]

Samuel D'Oyly[1][2][3] is the son of Charles D'Oyly, and the grandson of William D'Oyly. The name of his mother is unknown. He married Frances D'Oyly, but the couple did not have any children.

D'Oyly graduated M.A. as a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge in 1707 and became a Vicar of St. Nicolas, Rochester.[4]

The graves of The Reverend Samuel D'Oyly and his wife Frances are at Rochester Cathedral.

Translations

[edit]

Samuel D'Oyly is known to have translated two books from French to English: D'Oyly (1718)[5] and D'Oyly, Colson & Calmet (1732).[6]

The first book is rare, but there is a physical copy at the National Library of Australia.[7]

This second book was translated from the french work by Antoine Augustin Calmet (1720).[8][9] D'Oyly translated this book in collaboration with John Colson, a noted mathematician and clergyman.[10] Physical copies of the first edition translation into English, (1732) are now rare,[11] but derivatives are very popular and the English translation was very influential among Biblical Scholars seeing that it was, apparently, the first Bible Dictionary in English.[12] This English translation went into many editions by various editors.
