The Royal Star Arcade is an indoor shopping centre located on the High Street in Maidstone, Kent. Established in 1989, the site was historically the location of The Royal Star Hotel, a 16th-century coaching inn. Today, original architectural features remain within the arcade, and hosts a variety of independent retailers.

Together with Fremlin Walk and The Mall Maidstone, the Royal Star Arcade is one of three shopping centres in Maidstone.

History

[edit]

The origins of the site date back to the 16th century when it was home to The Star Hotel, a coaching inn that served travellers between London and Folkestone. During the 19th century, the hotel was granted the royal prefix "Royal" following a visit by Queen Victoria. The Medway Rooms, built within the hotel courtyard, became a prominent venue for local events for over 150 years.

In the late 20th century, the original hotel structure was replaced by new developments. The site was converted into the Royal Star Arcade in 1989, preserving select historical elements while adapting the space for retail use.[1]

David Bowie Plaque

[edit]

A David Bowie commemorative plaque was unveiled at the Royal Star Arcade on 15 June 2017. Organised by BBC Radio Kent as part of BBC Music Day, the plaque marks Bowie's performances with The Manish Boys at the Royal Star Hotel Ballroom during the 1960s.[2]

The plaque is one of three in the United Kingdom dedicated to Bowie, with the others located in Hull and at Trident Studios in Soho, London.[3]
