Protipokkho (transl.Rival) is a 1988 Indian Bengali-language action thriller film co-written and directed by Rathish Dey Sarkar in his directorial debut. Produced by Satyajit Mitra under his banner of Satyajit Films in its first production, the film is based on Prafulla Roy's story Ajante Kokhon. It stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Talluri Rameswari and Utpal Dutt in lead roles, while Satya Bandyopadhyay, Chinmoy Roy, Niranjan Roy, Sumanta Mukherjee, Noni Ganguly play supporting roles. It follows a brillant student Malay, who joins IPS after leaving no stone unturned to get a job, and discovers Umanath Ghoshal, his father-in-law, to be an illegal businessman.

Despite the filming having been finished in 1983, the film took five years to complete its unfinished production work. Ajoy Das composed its score and soundtrack, with lyrics penned by Pulak Bandyopadhyay and Das himself. The screenplay of the film was written by Mihir Sen, while Pintu Dasgupta and Ramesh Joshi handled its cinematography and editing respectively.

Protipokkho theatrically released on 5 February 1988, having no promotions. It bombed at the box office, while became a hit during its re-release twice in 1990 and 1995.

Plot

Malay Dutta, a brilliant student studying in a college, with fabulous academic record, holds the first position in the previous year HS exam. One day, on his way to college, he saves a girl from eve teasers and also punishing them. Sharmila Bose and the girl are both friends belonging to the same college where Malay studies. Sharmila and Malay began to meet each other quite frequently and they both fall in love.

Malay's only enemy is his poverty. His father died leaving him and his family in extreame poverty and hardship. Malay had to leave his studies to find a job, but whereever he went to seek a job he only answer he got was 'No Vacancy'. It was then when Umanath Ghosal came to know about his daughter's relation with Malay. Umanath Ghosal is a hardcore criminal conducting many illegal activities through his agents, under the veil of an established businessman. He insults Malay and asks him not to go around with his daughter Sharmila.

Malay takes the vow that, within 4years he will become an established man in the society. Sharmila helps him in his oath and he under goes the training of Indian Police Force. He becomes sucessful and becomes a police officer. He gets his superior, a very honest and helpful person as his guardian. Together they vow that they will expose Umanath's criminal acitivities. Malay and the poilice force conducts many raids and many criminals are arrested red handed. They all were agents of Umanath Ghosal. Then Malay tried to gather the evidence against Umanath. Armed with condemning evidence the police forces enters Umanath's house, and after a shootout Malay arrests Umanath. Sharmila tries to commit suicide but is saved by Malay.
