From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Osvalinda Alves Pereira ( 1968 Trairão – 12 April 2024 ), was a Brazilian environmental activist and founder of the Areia II Women's Association, which developed sustainable organic agriculture.[1]

In 2020, she received the Edelstam Award in recognition of her work in defending the Amazonas.[2][3][4] She is the first Brazilian to receive this distinction.

Career

[edit]

She alerted federal authorities about illegal deforestation in the Areia area. [5][6]

She founded the Areia II Women's Association, which is strategically located between three national parks: the Trairão National Forest, the Jamanxim National Park , and the Riozinho do Anfrísio Extractive Reserve .[7] Deforestation is occurring in these areas, and armed men have been scaring locals.[2] Due to the threats she has received since 2012, which intensified since 2018, she and her family had to move and remain in hiding in Brazil.[8][9][10][11]
