Omid Mozaffari is an Iranian herpetologist born in 1979.[1]

Biography

Omid was born and raised in Tehran, and at the tender age of three, Omid was already displaying an obvious difference from other kids by collecting small animals such as beetles and other arthropods. After graduating from high school, he started his M.Sc in Natural Resources Engineering (Environment), where he discovered his passion for reptiles and amphibians. He started a thorough scrutiny on reptiles of Kavir national park and Kavir protected area which culminate in a checklist of reptiles and amphibians of those places for the first time as well as an undescribed species. In 1999, he was introduced to professor Theodore J. Papenfuss, who paved Omid's way to the world of herpetology. Omid continue his study on Habitat and biodiversity for further education,focusing on reptiles and amphibians. Meanwhile, he started to photograph all reptiles and amphibians of Iran, not only as a hobby, but also as a task that has not been done. In 2006, he founded the 'Aria Herpetological Institute', the first Iranian NGO about reptiles and amphibians, with the goal of educating a young generation of Iranian herpetology enthusiasts and sharing knowledge and experience in that field. In 2012, he wrote 'the Atlas of reptiles of Iran,' the first book of its kind, which was published by Iran's Department of the Environment in 2018, along with many other books and articles. Omid Mozaffari has described 9 new species of reptiles and amphibians as a senior author or a member of a team.
