- Dr. Rogers’ clinicopathological study of both common and uncommon oral diseases has provided profound insights and understanding of Oral Dermatology. He has demonstrated that many conditions are not diseases sui generis but are the mucosal manifestation of underlying and sometimes correctable conditions. Examples of common conditions: canker sores, the sore, burning mouth complex and oral lichen planus. Uncommon conditions: Behcet’s disease, desquamative gingivitis, oral pemphigoid, Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, the vulvovaginal-gingival variant of erosive oral lichen planus and pyostomatitis vegetans. He has been recognized as an authority in that area having edited three volumes of the Dermatology Clinics and two volumes for Clinics in Dermatology. To date he has contributed more than 250 scholarly publications and continues to teach, mentor and publish well into his 80s. Dr. Rogers has co-authored three books with dentists, dermatologists, oral medicine and ENT specialists.

The AAD Gold Triangle Award was given in recognition of these contributions in 2004. The Ahmed, Fox, O’Leary and Gibilisco Lectureships were awarded for these accomplishments. In addition, Dr. Rogers was recognized by the British Society of Oral Medicine by his keynote address in 1999 and Honorary Membership in 2010.
