Natalie Mae (born April 28, 1984) is an American author of fantasy and young adult fiction.
Life and Career
[edit]Mae intended to pursue a career as a computer programmer and graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in Information Technology.[1] But writing continued to be her favorite pastime, which she had done in her spare time since childhood.[2] At age 24 she finished her first novel, a young adult fantasy, but after many rejections from literary agents she shelved the book. She then wrote a cyberthriller that landed her a literary agent.[3]
Though her cyberthriller sold to Macmillan, it quickly went out of print.[4] Mae then wrote The Kinder Poison, which sold to Penguin Random House. The book earned an accolade from People,[5] as well as starred reviews from Kirkus and School Library Journal, who called it "A funny, rewarding story for fans of optimistic tales with a bite,"[6] and "a must-purchase for all YA collections"[7]. However, the series' release during the 2020 pandemic hurt sales, and Mae's US publisher declined to pursue the third book. Mae self-published the final book in 2023, and the trilogy has since been translated into four other languages. In 2024, The Kinder Poison debuted on the Spiegel bestseller list in Germany.[8]
