Mya Pwint Phyu

Mya Pwint Phyu; born October 12, 1972 also known by her nicknames Emerald and Mya, is a businesswoman and designer and a former Beauty queen and actress.

Early Life

Mya Pwint Phyu was born in Sittwe, Rakhine State. She attended Primary school at the Teacher’s Training College (Yankin, Yangon)  High School at St. Augustines School, Yangon. She is the elder of  two siblings. She was the band leader (Majorette) of the student band at the Teacher’s Training College (Yankin, Yangon). She conducted the band with the skillful motions of her baton. It might be mentioned that her interest in fashion design was born when she was still a school girl. In fact, the costume she wore as the band leader was embellished by herself with sequins and feathers. Her interest in fashion was also apparent from the many delightful costumes she used to design for the cut-out paper dolls she play with most of the time.

From her early years (when she was about nine years old) she showed a great interest in needle work, having made several crochet doilies, handkerchief edgings and at the age of fifteen she crocheted an entire bedcover.

Having graduated from high school at the age of sixteen, she attended the University of Yangon and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in History. Following this, she went on with her post-graduate studies and graduated with a Masters Degree in History in 2000.

The year 2000, proved to be the highlight of her life as she also married her fiancé, Zaw Minn Aung, a fellow university student,in a traditional Rakhine Wedding Ceremony

Career

Miss Konica (Singapore)

Before her career as a movie actress, in 1991, she participated in the Miss YMCA Beauty Contest at Yangon where she was selected as the Winner. Thereafter, in 1993, she participated in the Miss Konica Beauty Competition (Singapore 1993) and she was awarded the title of Miss Konica, Singapore.

Her career as a movie actress started with the popular Myanmar movie, “Ma Chaw Lay Yauk Ko Ta Yauk” “မချောလေးယောက်ကိုယ်တစ်ယောက်” . She became well-known for her role in the TV Series “Eagle Five” which was regularly televised on the MRTV and Myawaddy TV Channels.

In 2002, she set up the Pyinsaman Laban Trading Co, Ltd. In 2007, she established her own brand “Ladies’ Heart Fashion” in collaboration with her business partner in Hong Kong.

In 2009, she accompanied her husband to New York where he had been posted as the First Secretary at the Myanmar Permanent Mission to the United Nations. While she was in New York, she attended the Fashion Institute of Technology, Academy of Art University, New York and graduated with a Diploma in Technical Fashion Design.


While she was in New York, as a member of the United Nations Hospitality Committee, she participated in several activities including the UN Ladies Quilting Group and designed and produced the Myanmar portion which was included in the UN Postcard that year. In 2012, The Asian Pacific Permanent Representative Group organized a fashion show as a funding for the UNICEF. She participated in the show both as a model and as a designer of traditional attire.

In appreciation of her unstinting efforts, the UN Secretary General’s wife, Mrs. Bankimoon, awarded her a certificate of appreciation at the Asian Ladies Circle on 23rd May 2012.

Since her return to Myanmar in 2012, she has been designing and arranging traditional Myanmar wedding ceremonies. These ceremonies have grown to be popular for their detail to authentic, ethnic weddings modified in keeping with tradition.Recently, she planned the entire Rakhine Traditional Wedding Ceremony and designed the costumes for the bride, groom, brides maids, best men, flower girls, ring bearer and the othermembers of the wedding group for the wedding of the popular movie star and vocalist “Yadanar My.”

She also undertakes the design of special costumes for the Movies. For instance, in 2014, she designed the costumes for the cast of the 3D historical documentary movie, “The Great Myanmar” which was shown at theatres around the world.

In addition, one of the most popular Myanmar movie stars, Nay Toe’s costumes have been customized and designed by her.

Apart from her design and wedding planning work, she also gives free training in sewing and embroidery to illiterate girls thereby enabling them to earn a living. In this regard, in 2018, she received the AWEN Award in Thailand, Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association - MWEA Outstanding Women award and Myanmar Women's Affairs Federation - MWAF Outstanding Women award for her contribution to elevating the lives of young, uneducated and underprivileged women in Myanmar.
