Education and career

[edit]

Competing in the Calgary Performing Arts Festival in 2015, Jien won the Woodwind Solo - Baroque Sonata 18 years and under division.[4]

Jien received her bachelor's of music in flute performance from the University of Calgary, holding the position of Principal Flute of the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble and composing a clarinet quartet that premiered in 2017.[5][6]

While attending the University of Toronto,[7][8][9][10] Jien released her first EP, Wildfire,[11] and contributed to the score[12] of the online game The Day The Sky Fell.[13] Her short film "What Is Music to You?" was selected for the Create From Home Film Festival.[14][15] She later graduated with a master's degree in music[16] and built her community on Twitch.[17]

In May 2023, Jien performed at MOGUL HOUSE for her first show in the United States,[18][19] also fielding questions between songs.[20] In November 2023, she performed at the Jade Music Fest,[21][22] where she utilized live looping to layer live guitar, vocals, and flute.[23][24] Jien opened for Meadowlark on their final live performance in December of 2023[25] before returning for the 2024 version of the Jade Music Festival in Taiwan,[26] as well as being an opening artist at the Concert of Convergence, Jade Music Festival's only ticketed event in Calgary,[27] finally performing on closing night in the Vancouver version[28] and being interviewed about her music creation story on "Imagine Space".[29]
