Mate Jakab is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Hungarian Women's National Team.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Mate Jakab was born in Hungary. He developed an interest in basketball at a young age, playing for local youth teams. He attended Budapest Business University, where he studied International Management and Business.[2]
In 2017, he sought to expand his knowledge in sports science by enrolling at the University of Physical Education in Budapest, where he earned his BA diploma in 2021. Jakab is dedicated to continual self-improvement and was part of the first generation of the EuroLeague Head Coaches Board (EHCB) Coaches Academy, a one-year coaching course.[3]
Coaching career
[edit]Jakab began his coaching career in 2011, taking on the role of assistant coach at Vasas Academy. He quickly gained recognition for his innovative coaching style and ability to develop young talent.
He then committed to UNI-Győr (2014-2016), a prestigious women's basketball team in Hungary. The club competed in the EuroCup Women during both seasons, finishing the Hungarian Championship with a bronze medal in 2015 and reaching 2nd place in 2016.[4]
In 2016, Jakab signed with the ambitious men's basketball club Budapest MAFC (2016-2017), where he started the season as an assistant coach but took over as head coach in January. He further advanced his career by joining Szolnoki Olaj (2017-2020), one of the most successful basketball teams in Hungary.[5]
Jakab spent his last domestic season at the National Academy of Honvéd Basket (2020-2021), where he served as the head coach of the U18 team before signing abroad.[6]
International Career
The 2021-2022 season marked Jakab's 10th season as a basketball coach. He began his international career at Brose Bamberg, a highly regarded club in Germany competing in the Basketball Bundesliga.[7] The Bavarian team has won 9 championships and 5 cup titles. Jakab served the organization as an assistant coach for both seasons. In his first year, the club did not participate in any international competition; however, in the 2022-2023 season, they played in the FIBA Europe Cup and reached the top 8.
Following his experience in Germany, Jakab received an offer from the New Zealand Breakers (NBL Australia) in 2023, joining the coaching staff under head coach Mody Maor.[8]
