Early life and education
[edit]Madhusanka Liyanage was born on September 4, 1985, in Udugama, Galle District, Sri Lanka.[citation needed] He began his primary education at Udugama Maha Vidyalaya.[citation needed] After excelling in the Grade Five Scholarship examination, he was admitted to Richmond College in Galle, where he participated in national mathematics competitions and the International Mathematics Olympiad.[2]
After completing his secondary education, Liyanage was awarded the Dialog GSM Technology Scholarship and the Mahapola Merit Scholarship, enabling him to pursue higher education at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.[citation needed] He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering with First Class Honors in 2009.[3]
He completed a Master of Engineering at the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, focusing on telecommunications. Subsequently, he obtained a Master of Science from Polytech Nice-Sophia at the Université de Nice Sophia Antipolis in France, where he expanded his expertise in network engineering and security.[4]
In 2016, Liyanage achieved his Doctor of Science (Technology) degree from the University of Oulu in Finland. His doctoral research focused on enhancing the security and scalability of Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS).[5]
Academic and professional career
[edit]Liyanage is an Associate Professor and Ad Astra Fellow at the School of Computer Science at University College Dublin (UCD) in Ireland[6]. He specializes in network security, 5G/6G networks, blockchain technologies, and artificial intelligence. He also serves as the Director of Graduate Research at UCD, overseeing postgraduate students' research activities.[7]
He holds adjunct professorships at the University of Oulu in Finland, the University of Ruhuna, and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Sri Lanka.[8]
Network softwarization and security labs research laboratory
[edit]At UCD, Liyanage leads the Network Softwarization and Security Labs (NetsLab)[9] which focuses on research in network systems and security in the following topic areas.
- Network Softwarization and Security Automation: Focusing on addressing novel security issue and secure deployment of softwared networks.[10]
- Implementing Blockchain in 5G/6G Networks: Exploring the integration of blockchain to enhance security, trust, and transparency in network communications, particularly within the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems.[11]
