MARINE MOLLUSCA OF PAKISTAN (Northern Arabian Sea)

[edit]

The northern Arabian Sea seems to have the highest diversity of Mollusca, on exploring some of the literature, including along the Pakistan coastline (Thalia et al, 2021). Appropriate conservation measures are to be taken for judicious exploitation of the existing reserve and to impose precautionary measures to resist overexploitation of rare species leading to extinction (Appukuttan, 1996). Marine molluscs have an important role in the economic and cultural life of some countries.

The coastal belt of Pakistan extends 1,050 km, 250 km falling in Sindh province and 800 km in Balochistan.

A checklist of coastal molluscs recorded from Pakistan is presented. The phylum is typically divided into nine or ten taxonomic classes, of which two are entirely extinct. The extant classes are: Aplacophora (Shell less worm-like organisms), Polyplacophora (Chitons), Monoplacophora (Molluscs with cap-like shells), Gastropoda (All the snails and slugs including abalone, limpets, conch, nudibranchs, sea hares, sea butterflies), Cephalopoda (Squids, octopi, cuttlefish, nautilus), Bivalvia (Clams, oysters, scallops, geoducks, mussels) and Scaphopoda (Tusk shells). Of these 5 extant classes are present here. The marine molluscs of Pakistan are a part of the fauna of Pakistan. The compiler of this list Quddusi B.Kazmi did create a base in 2019 for scientists interested in studying biodiversity of Mollusca in Pakistan. She compiled1152 species:-9 in Polyplacophora, 16 in Scaphopoda, 714 in Gastropoda, 351 in Bivalvia and 62 in Cephalopoda. The Third National Report- Pakistan shows total reported in Pakistan is 769. There is however, hitherto no reliable estimates on the number of marine species found in Pakistan. The present new list is a compilation of many scientists’ endeavors from the marine zone of Pakistan (Nevill, 1878; Melvill; 1892-1918; Melvill and Standen, 1898-1903; Ashraf, 1969; Khan and Dastagir, 1970, 1972; Tirmizi and Barkati, 1983;Tirmizi and Zehra, 1984; Kazmi, several papers of single record and Kazmi et al, 2019; Zehra, 2001; Iffat, 2005; Kazmi and Moazzam, 2014; 2018; Ghani et al, 2018; Gul, 2019, Aslam et al, 2020; Moazzam and Moazzam, 2023) in more than two hundred years on the taxonomy of this group. The compiler examined her own samplings made in recent years, further she included those collected by other explorer malacologists and zoological museums keeping them up to date as to what species are known, their current scientific names are given in bold italics. As such, compiler has tried to keep the data within as current as possible.
