Luca Dal Canto (born 21 June 1981 in Livorno) is an Italian film director and film-maker. In 2024 he won the Mention d'Honneur with the short film "The last sticker" ("L'ultima figurina") at the finals Sport Movies & Tv Ficts in Milan,[1][2] the most important world sports festival, the only one recognized by the IOC (International Olympic Committee).

With his works he has won 116 official selections and 26 awards.

Biography

He graduated in 2006 in Cinema, Theatre and Multimedia Production at the University of Pisa and immediately started working as an assistant director in the film industry. First as assistant director and then as planner or assistant director (I and II AD), he has collaborated with the most important Italian production companies and with many directors, including Enrico Oldoini, Daniele Luchetti, Gianni Costantino, Paolo Costella, Claudio Noce, Matteo Oleotto, Alexis Sweet, Chiara Malta. In 2010 he started working as a film-maker and director and founded the LDC Audiovisual Factory, a small network of professionals in the audiovisual and cinematographic field with whom he creates many commercials, video clips and short films. In 2012 he won the Backstage Film Festival with the behind-the-scenes of the movie "10 regole per fare innamorare" by Cristiano Bortone with Vincenzo Salemme. His first short film distributed is from 2012 and is entitled "The wool coat" ("Le manteau en laine", "Il cappotto di lana"). With this short film, inspired by the poet Giorgio Caproni, he wins 16 awards and 55 official selections,[3] including Paris Courts Devant, San Marino Film Festival, Sedicicorto and Salento Finibus Terrae.

The next "Two days in summer" ("Deux jours d'été", "Due giorni d'estate") is presented at the 67th Cannes Film Festival in the out-of-competition section Short Film Corner[3] and distributed on 5 continents, also winning 5 awards and 33 official selections in international festivals including Mumbai International Film Festival, VideoCorto Nettuno, Formia Film Festival[4] and Sardinia Film Festival. In both shorts, the main actor is the young Lorenzo Aloi, who is now a leading performer of the new generation of Italian actors.[4]

In 2016 Luca Dal Canto signed a short docu-film entitled "L'alluvione ha sommerso" ("L'inonation a inglouti"), inspired by Dino Campana and the poem "L'alluvione ha sommerso il pack dei mobili" by Eugenio Montale. The short film is presented in Brussels at the Maelstrom Festival 2017. Also in 2016, a retrospective is dedicated to him in Strasbourg at the historic Cinéma Odyssée by Faruk Gunaltay, organized by the Italian Institute of Culture of the French city, with his short films "Il cappotto di lana" and "Due giorni d'estate" "The places of Modigliani between Livorno and Paris".[5]

In 2024 is instead "L'ultima figurina" ("The last sticker"), short fiction dedicated to the glorious Unione Sportiva Livorno 1915, with which he gets 9 official selections, 6 nominations and 4 awards, including Best Short Film at' Overtime Festival[3] and the Mention d'Honneur at the so-called Oscar of the Sports Cinema and Television Ficts of Milan.[6][7]

As a photographer he realized in 2014 the project "I luoghi di Modigliani tra Livorno e Parigi[8]", a journey through the life of the artist and man Amedeo Modigliani through 50 places immortalized today after 100 years of socio-cultural and urban changes[9][1]. The project has been shown in 13 exhibitions in various cities including Livorno, Turin, Pisa, Marseille, Strasbourg and Paris, where in 2024 it was hosted for 3 weeks in the oldest library of the French capital[8], the Librairie Jousseaume inside the famous Galerie Vivienne.[10]
