His career spans various sectors, including legal practice, government service, and non-governmental organisations. Wessels has contributed to advancing human rights, fostering inclusivity, and promoting development within Namibia’s informal communities and cultural sectors.

Early Life and Education

Wessels was born and raised in Windhoek, Namibia, under the care of his grandmother, Elizabeth Wessels[1]. He spent parts of his childhood in Zambia[2] and South Africa[3]. Wessels holds formal qualifications in political science, law, telecommunications engineering, and accounting. These diverse fields of study have informed his multidisciplinary approach to professional and advocacy work.

Career

Wessels began his professional career in private legal practice, focusing on civil law. Subsequently, he transitioned into government service, where he gained experience in public administration and policy development.

Currently, Wessels serves as the Head of Public Policy and Legal Affairs at New Elementary Namibia, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to rehabilitating early childhood education centres in informal settlements[4]. In this capacity, he manages policy advocacy, legal administration, and stakeholder engagement. Additionally, he oversees legal administration for Equal Namibia[5] and Drag Night Namibia[6], organisations focused on promoting equality and inclusivity.

As a proponent of economic equity, Wessels has championed the Basic Income Grant (BIG) initiative in Namibia, advocating for its implementation as a means of improving the livelihoods of all Namibians[9].

Human Rights Advocacy

Wessels has been involved in regional efforts to advance human rights, particularly in advocating for LGBTQI+ rights in Southern Africa. His participation in forums such as the Southern African Litigation Centre's Regional Activist Forum has included discussions on litigation strategies, gender persecution, and cross-border learning[10]. Wessels is an advocate for the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Namibia and the broader region.

Political Involvement

As a member of the Republican Party of Namibia[11], Wessels holds the position of Head of the Youth Wing, focusing on engaging young people in political processes and policymaking. In 2024, Wessels was included in the top 10 parliamentary candidates for the party and was the youngest person on the list, highlighting his significant role in youth representation and political leadership.

Wessels has demonstrated an interest in Namibia’s arts and cultural sectors, supporting initiatives that promote creative expression and innovation. He has worked to empower artists and foster the development of cultural industries in Namibia.
