John Page is an American guitar designer,[1] builder and artist. He is the co-founder of the Fender Custom Shop and the founder of John Page Guitars.[2] Page played a significant role in developing techniques like relicing, which gives new guitars an aged appearance.[3] Throughout his career, Page has collaborated with notable musicians and worked on custom projects for well-known brands.[4]
Early life and career
[edit]John Page was born in 1957 in Inglewood, California, USA. his career began in 1978 when he joined Fender, where working alongside Freddie Tavares, he developed skills that shaped his approach to guitar building.[5]
Working in the Fender's Research and Development team, Page contributed to guitar design for nine years before co-founding the Fender Custom shop in 1987 alongside Michael Stevens.[6][7] As head of the custom Shop, Page oversaw the creation of guitars for musicians like Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and Pete Townshend. He also led collaborations with companies such as Harley-Davidson and Jaguar Automobiles. During his time at Fender, Page pioneered the relicing technique, which became hallmark of vintage-inspired guitar designs.[8]
Independent ventures
[edit]In 1998, he left Fender and became the first Executive Director of the Fender Museum of Music and the Arts in Corona, Carlifornia.[9][10] There, he established Kids Rock Free, a program offering free music education for children.[11]
After leaving Fender, Page established his own company, John Page Guitars, where he focused on crafting guitars. Later, he collaborated with manufacturers to create John Page Classic: production model guitars inspired by his custom designs.[12][13] Later, the company moved to a hand-made-in-USA production model. These efforts allowed his work to reach a broader audience while maintaining the focus on quality craftsmanship. Page also ventured into creating Art Guitars, which blend guitar building with artistic expression. These pieces, while functional, are intended as creative works and have been featured in exhibitions and publications like Fretboard Journal.[14]
Contributions to music education
[edit]Page has been actively involved in promoting music education. His Kids Rock Free program, founded in 1997, provides free music education to children, helping young people learn to play music.[15] Through his program, Page made music education accessible to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
Publications
[edit]Page's career and work have been discussed in various industry publications, including ''The Dream Factory'' by Tom Wheeler.[16]
