Draft:J. Steven Svoboda
Submission declined on 7 January 2025 by Vrxces (talk). This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.

- Comment: This draft is a noble effort but contains a misapprehension on what is sought when looking at general notability for biographies. The citations broadly are a sum of research Svoboda has undertaken or been cited in or interviews of Svoboda engaging in advocacy. A review of the sources does not show that there is much significant coverage about Svoboda himself to merit an informative overview of an article. This can be seen in the structure of the article itself, which collates Svoboda's appearance in different types of media; were this the standard, any researcher with a wide enough body of work would be eligible for an article. Is there any reliable sourcing that discusses Svoboda's contributions in WP:DEPTH as the subject matter of the source? VRXCES (talk) 11:28, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
J. Steven Svoboda is a children's rights attorney and Harvard Law School graduate.[1][2]: 2 [3] He is a child genital cutting expert. Particularly, he is a circumcision legal expert and scientist.[4][5] He is the founder and executive director of the organization Attorneys for the Rights of the Child (ARC).
Child genital cutting expertise
[edit]He is a child genital cutting expert: he studied the links between intersex surgeries, FGC, Female genital cosmetic surgery and male circumcision.[6]: 220 [7]: 24 [8]: 42
Attorneys for the Rights of the Child
[edit]In 1997, he founded the California-based NGO Attorneys for the Rights of the Child (ARC).[9][10]: E1 [11]: 142 [12] He is also its executive director.[9][13][14][15] With other advocates and lawyers, ARC has convinced legislators and insurance companies to stop allowing Medicaid, a health programme for poor people, to pay for non-therapeutic neonatal circumcision, in 18 US states, as of 2012.[13][9] Svoboda estimated that this meant hundreds of thousands less circumcisions.[9]
Academic articles
[edit]He has authored and coauthored thorough articles on legal and ethical questions surrounding circumcision, particularly in non-voluntary and non-therapeutic cases.[16](Preface ix)[17][18][3] In 2007, with historian Robert Darby, he wrote the Medical Anthropology Quarterly article A Rose by Any Other Name.[14] In 2013, in the Journal of Medical Ethics, he wrote the article Circumcision of male infants as human rights violation.[19]: 68 The same year and in the same journal, with pediatrician Robert Van Howe, he wrote Out of step: fatal flaws in the latest AAP policy report on neonatal circumcision.[17][20]: 48 [12][17] In 2017, he wrote one of the two American Medical Association Journal of Ethics articles challenging the the morality of infant circumcision.[21]: 53 [20]: 132 [22]: 48 [23]: 740 In it, evaluating various studies, he states that nontherapeutic circumcision iatrogenically harms infants, in physical, emotional and sexual ways.[20]: 132 [22]: 48 [21]: 53 [23]: 740
Conferences
[edit]He was a speaker, on circumcision, at the 2024 London International Conference on Men's Issues.[1]
Interviews
[edit]In 2006, he was interviewed on routine infant circumcision by Health Progress and in 2008 by Psychology Today.[4][24] He was interviewed a dozen times by radio talk show host María Viola Sánchez.[10]
Medical organizations
[edit]His work was positively quoted by the Royal Dutch Medical Association.[17] In 2013, with pediatrician Robert Van Howe, he criticized the American Academy of Pediatrics's 2012 infant circumcision policy, in the Journal of Medical Ethics article Out of step: fatal flaws in the latest AAP policy report on neonatal circumcision.[17][20]: 132 [22]: 48 [12][17]
