Gladiators (franchise)

Gladiators: Who Will Dare To Challenge Them? (Gladiators: Qui Osera Les Défier?) is an upcoming French entertainment game show, based on the successful 2024 British reboot of the Gladiators franchise. The series is set to premiere on 27 December 2024 on TF1 and streaming service TF1+,[1] and is being hosted by Hélène Mannarino and Jean-Pierre Foucault,[2][3][4] with live commentary provided by Denis Brogniart.[5]

On the show, ordinary members of the French public battle against sixteen elite athletes, also known as "Gladiateurs" (Gladiators) in a series of physically demanding events, before facing each other in the legendary "Eliminator" course. Following a knockout-format, the series male and female winners will win a "Golden Helmet" – the "eternal respect" of the Gladiators themselves, and the grand prize of 50 000 euros.[2]

The program sees the adaptation of some of the events from the British version, like "Duel", "Powerball", "The Wall", "The Edge", and the legendary assault course "Eliminator".

The French series was commenced after the ratings success of the newest British reboot of the franchise broadcast by the BBC in early 2024.[6] It was produced in Aren'Ice, a ice rink and multi-purpose arena in the town of Cergy, during the late summer, with the audience attendance of approximately 1,500.[7][8]

Events

[edit]

In total, the program features 10 different events that require agility, speed, balance and endurance.[9]

In addition to the final Eliminator obstacle course, the following events are included on the French version:

  • L'Cible – In this event, the contenders must reach and press the button in the center of the arena, while avoiding the tackling Gladiators. Known as "The Ring" in the UK.
  • Course Poursuite – In this event, the contenders must climb a vertical rock wall, while being "pursued" by the Gladiators. Known as "The Wall" internationally.
  • Collision – In Collision, the contender must make it across an unstable suspension bridge, and carry balls while avoiding four Gladiators swinging towards this, to claim points.
  • Duel (Bridge) – In this version of the classical event, the contender and the Gladiator start from the opposite end of an suspension bridge, and try to knock each other off with a pugil stick.
  • Duel (Podiums) – Classical event of the Gladiators-franchise. In this version of Duel, the contender must eliminate the Gladiator with a pugil stick, while standing on an elevated podium several feet above the ground.
  • Passage Én Force – In this event the contender must reach to the other end of the track, while a team of Gladiators try and stop this with foam weapons on the way. Known as "Gauntlet" internationally.
  • Powerball – In this classical event of the format, the contenders must score points by putting balls into the baskets around the studio floor, while three Gladiators try to tackle them to the ground.
  • Vertigo – In this event, the contender must make it across a narrow set of crossbeams hanging from the studio ceiling, while avoiding getting tackled by one Gladiator. Known as "The Edge" internationally.
  • Whiplash (name TBD) – In this event, the contender and the Gladiator are attached with a dogbone. The contender must eliminate the Gladiator from a ring-shaped area. Known as "Whiplash" internationally.
