The videography and filmography of Japanese singer-songwriter, musician, and actor Gen Hoshino consists of music videos, video albums, appearances in films, TV-series, and commercials. As a personality, he has also hosted and appeared on various radio programs and variety shows.

A musical artist, Hoshino has released 34 music videos. Under the unit name Ichirō Yamada with visual designer Daijirō Ōhara and video director Santa Yamagishi, Hoshino co-directed all three videos from his first two albums Baka no Uta (2010) and Episode (2011). Since, he has collaborated with various directors for his music videos. Hoshino received three consecutive nominations for Best Video of the Year at the Space Shower Music Video Awards from 2013–15, though without any wins. Kazuaki Seki's videos for Hoshino's fourth and fifth albums Yellow Dancer (2015) and Pop Virus (2018), respectively, won several accolades at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan, including Best Male Video for "Sun" (2015), Video of the Year for "Family Song" (2017), and Best Pop Video and Best Art Direction for "Idea" (2018). Seki's video for "Koi" (2016)—featuring choreography directed by Mikiko and performed by Elevenplay—won Best Choreography at MTV, and was named Video of the Year at the Space Shower Music Awards. In 2022, the video to Hoshino's "Fushigi" by Kyōtarō Hayashi became his second Video of the Year at Space Shower. Additionally to music videos, Hoshino has released two lyric videos to promote songs from his EP Same Thing (2019), and three listen-along videos to promote songs from studio albums. His label has released nine video albums: five concert videos, three music video compilations, and one radio special.

Hoshino's acting career started with Suzuki Matsuo's theatre troope and talent agency, Otona Keikaku, in the play Ningen Gohasan (2003). He expanded his career with supporting roles in television dramas such as Water Boys (2003) and Tiger & Dragon (2005), before he played his first lead role as Watashi (lit.'I') in the show Kyonen Renoir de (2007).[1] In 2013, he starred in film roles as a 35-year-old public servant in the romance comedy Blindly in Love,[2] as a young boy dragged into a film production led by yakuzas in Why Don't You Play in Hell?,[3] and as the voice of the Buddha living in modern-day Japan alongside Jesus (Mirai Moriyama) in the anime feature Saint Young Men.[4] For his performances in Blindly in Love and Why Don't You Play in Hell?, Hoshino won Newcomer of the Year awards at various events, including the Yokohama Film Festival,[5] the Japan Academy Film Prize,[6] the Japanese Movie Critics Awards,[7] and the Mainichi Film Awards.[8]

Hoshino portrayed a obstetrician besides Go Ayano in the first and second seasons of Dr. Stork in 2015 and 2017. In 2016, he brokeout as a socially awkward bachelor in The Full-Time Wife Escapist, opposite his real-life future wife Yui Aragaki.[1][3] For his portrayal in The Full-Time Wife Escapist, Hoshino was named Best Supporting Actor at the Television Drama Academy Awards[9] and was nominated for Best Actor at the Seoul International Drama Awards.[10] He was cast in the lead role of the 2019 film Samurai Shifters as a bookworm samurai tasked with helping a daimyo move residence.[11] The following year, he was again made co-workers with Go Ayano in MIU404 (2020), where he played the composed detective Kazumi Shima.[1] The same year, he won Best Supporting Actor at the Hochi Film Awards for his portrayal of a tailor, unknowingly used to record randsom tapes as a child, in The Voice of Sin, opposite a journalist played by Shun Oguri.[12][13] Hoshino was re-cast as Kazumi Shima in the 2024 film Last Mile[14] and is set to portray a best-selling author in the 2025 drama series Slow Train.[15]

Other roles by Hoshino include appearances on radio and variety shows. In 2008, he served as an irregular host on All Night Nippon Creators, a spin-off program to All Night Nippon.[16] From 2011 to 2014, he led his own segment on the J-Wave program Radipedia[17][18] and co-hosted the show Sake no Sakana on streaming site Ustream with Ichiro Yamaguchi of Sakanaction.[19] Hoshino was instated as a regular personality on the main All Night Nippon roster in 2016, where he still presents his own weekly segment as of 2024.[16][20] On his own variety show Ogen-san to Issho, Hoshino portrays the mother of the Ogen-san family, who together play and discuss music;[21] it has spawned a spin-off series, Ogen-san no Subscription-dō.[22] In 2023, he co-hosted the six-episode Netflix talk show Lighthouse with comedian Masayasu Wakabayashi.[23]
