Francesca Caterina of Savoy (Italian: Francesca Caterina di Savoia; 5 October 1595 – 20 October 1640) was an Italian Nun. She was the eighth child and fourth daughter of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy and his wife; Catalina Micaela of Spain.

Early Life

[edit]

Born on 5 October 1595, Francesca was the eighth child and fourth daughter of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy and his wife; Catalina Micaela of Spain.[1] After the premature death of her mother, Francesca and her elder sister, Maria Apollonia were placed under the care of their mother's former lady-in-waiting Mariana de Tassis y Acuña.

Sisters of Penance

[edit]

After Maria Apollonia made a vow to virginity, Francesca followed by making a similar vow. Together, they were ordained to the Third Order of Saint Francis.[2] Encouraged by the Archbishop of Turin, the two women founded a shelter dedicated for the rehabilitation of prostitutes. In 1634, they went together to the Sanctuary of Oropa for a period of reflection, while participating in activities of the vestments.
