Federico Giuseppe Usuelli (January 7, 1979) is an Italian orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle surgery.
Usuelli is renowned for developing innovative techniques in ankle arthroplasty, including the introduction of an arthroscopic approach for cartilage repair, and for his contributions to international training and humanitarian efforts.[1]
Early life
[edit]Usuelli was born in Italy in 1979. From a young age, he displayed a strong interest in science and medicine. After completing his primary and secondary education, he pursued a degree in Medicine and Surgery, eventually specializing in Orthopedics and Traumatology. His early career included training abroad, where he worked alongside leading specialists, further honing his skills in orthopedic surgery.[2]
Medical career
[edit]Usuelli graduated in Medicine and Surgery and specialized in Orthopedics and Traumatology, completing part of his training abroad. During his early career, he collaborated with Professor Beat Hintermann in Switzerland, focusing on advanced techniques in ankle arthroplasty. His time abroad allowed him to deepen his expertise in foot and ankle surgery.[3]
In 2016, Usuelli began working at IRCCS Galeazzi in Milan, where he led the "Casco Piede e Caviglia" unit dedicated to foot and ankle surgery. By 2019, he was appointed Head of the Ankle and Foot Orthopedics Department at Humanitas San Pio X in Milan.[4]
Usuelli is renowned for pioneering innovative surgical techniques, including the development of an arthroscopic approach for cartilage repair and advanced methods in ankle arthroplasty. He has published over 70 scientific articles indexed on PubMed and is recognized as a leading expert in his field.[5]
He is an active member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and contributed to founding the Asia Pacific Foot and Ankle Society. Usuelli also serves on the editorial board of Foot and Ankle Clinics.
In recognition of his contributions to orthopedic surgery, particularly for introducing innovative techniques in ankle arthroplasty, Usuelli was awarded the title of Commendatore of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.[6]
Other interests
[edit]Usuelli is deeply committed to global outreach and education. Through Steps 2 Walk, he combines surgical expertise with training programs in resource-limited countries, helping to improve orthopedic care worldwide, furthering education and global outreach in orthopedics..[7]
Beyond his medical career, Usuelli has been involved in charitable initiatives and community programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-founded the “Niguarda Tutti” campaign, which raised over €193,000 to fund intensive care beds and medical equipment. His dedication to combining medical excellence with social impact has been a hallmark of his career.
