Evan Matthew Oshan (born January 23, 1966) is an American lawyer who practices personal injury law and specializes in high profile cases involving wrongful deaths and permanent or catastrophic injuries. Oshan is a known for his work representing plaintiffs and fighting against racial discrimination.

Early life and education

Oshan was born in Los Angeles, California. He is the youngest of five children. His mother, Molly, worked as a teacher and continued working even after she became completely blind at seventy-five years old. Oshan attended the University of California Los Angeles and received his B.A., graduating cum laude and received his bachelor's degree in History in 1989 and and his Juris Doctor in 1995 from University of California Hastings College of The Law.

Career

Oshan was admitted to the Washington State bar on 07/28/2000. In 2009, he was admitted to the New York Bar.

Political activity

Although Oshan is primarily an attorney, he seeks social and political change in a variety of topics such as racial discrimination, civil rights advocacy and animal rights including through media interviews lobbying for new laws and filing suits.

Notable Cases

Kokito

In March 2018 , the death of Kokito the French Bulldog sparked an outrage in the media internationally. Shortly after Kokito's death Oshan became the attorney for the family advocating for animal rights. The 10-month-old puppy died due to suffocation after a United Airlines flight attendant insisted that the canine’s carrier be stored in the overhead bin. Kokito was found dead upon arrival when plane landed at N.Y.C.’s LaGuardia Airport. In May 2018, Oshan reached a settlement with the airline on behalf of the family which is to remain confidential.

Harlem Fire

In 2019, Oshan became the attorney for the family of Harlem fire victims that claimed the lives of six people. Victims were Andrea Pollidore, Matt Abdularaph, 33, Nakaira Pollidore, 11, Andre Pollidore, 8, Brooklyn Pollidore, 6, and Elijah Pollidore, 3. On behalf of the family Oshan filed a wrongful death suit in the amount of $2.2 billion dollars. Mayor Bill de Blasio called the family's death a "gut-wrenching moment for all of us." de Blasio said during a midday news conference.

CHOP Zone

Some of Oshan's notable cases include multiple wrongful deaths and permanent injuries to his clients during the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest. In 2020, Oshan became the attorney for the families of Horace Lorenzo Anderson Jr and Antonio Mays Jr, both shot and killed at the CHOP zone. Oshan also became the attorney for a passenger, a 14-year-old boy named Robert West who survived with life altering injuries such as a traumatic brain injury, loss of an eye, and the removal of part of his skull.

Settlement in the amount of $500,000 reached for the family of Horace Lorenzo Anderson Jr. Ongoing cases surrounding their killings or injuries led to media coverage in the U.S. as well as worldwide.

Kaloni Bolton

In 2021 Oshan became the attorney for the father of Kaloni Bolton. Kaloni was a black twelve year old girl with a history of asthma, that was denied medical treatment and subsequently died after being told to wait in the parking lot of an Urgent Care during Covid. Oshan claimed neglect and racial discrimination contributed to her death.
