Emilio Santoyo (Cuautitlán, Estado de Mexico, 1990) is a Mexican artist and filmmaker.[1] He directed the short film "The perfect absent"[2](2019), a well as the fictional feature-length films "Ana's desire[3][4][5]" (2019), "Silver heart" (co-direction, 2023), "This savage beast[6]" (in postproduction)[7] and "Vera, Vera, Vera (or the behaviour of broken hearts)[8]" (in postproduction). His films have been shown in International Film Festivals like the Mostra de Cinema de Sao Paulo, Zsigmond Vilmos International Film Festival, Zaragoza Film Festival, Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival,[9] Los Cabos International Film Festival,[10] Morelia International Film Festival, Hola México Film Festival and Havana Film Festival, among others. In 2015 he founded the film production company Anomia.[11]
Emilio holds a BA in film direction from CENTRO de Diseño, Cine y Television (Mexico) and a MA in Artistic Research from the Netherlands Film Academy.[12] where he published the Guidebook for the new melodramatic Method,[13] publication for the Artistic Research "Super (im) positions: Subverting melodramatic representation through personal unpredictability".[14] He formed part of Berlinale Talents Guadalajara.
His work investigates themes such as the representation of love[15] and violence,[16] family and memory,[17] questioning and expanding the possibilities of fiction in cinema through multi-disciplinary methods of production.
