Dynamic Duo is an upcoming American animated superhero film based on DC Comics featuring the Robin characters Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Produced by DC Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, and 6th & Idaho, and to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is being directed by Arthur Mintz from a screenplay written by Matthew Aldrich. The film serves as an origin story following Grayson and Todd, otherwise known as the Robins, as orphans and the "Dynamic Duo".

An animated film focused on the Dick Grayson and Jason Todd incarnations of Robin was announced in October 2024, with Mintz's Swaybox Studios providing the film's puppetry animation.

Dynamic Duo is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on June 30, 2028.

Development

[edit]

In October 2024, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation greenlit a theatrical animated film titled Dynamic Duo, to be focused on the origin story of the DC Comics characters Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Both characters are orphans who become the superhero Robin, sidekick of Batman. The term "Dynamic Duo" typically refers to the pairing of Batman and Robin.[1][2] Variety said early reports that Grayson and Todd would begin the film as thieves were not true.[3] Arthur Mintz was set to direct the film with Matthew Aldrich writing the script. The film's digital puppetry "Momo animation" technology, which combines computer animation with practical stop motion and live-action performances, was being provided by Mintz's animation studio Swaybox Studios. DC's The Batman (2022) director Matt Reeves was producing the film through his production company 6th & Idaho, but it is not connected to that film's continuity. DC Studios co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran were also producing the film alongside Mintz's wife and Swaybox co-founder/co-CEO Theresa Andersson, while Michael E. Uslan was serving as an executive producer.[1] Dynamic Duo is the first animated film produced by DC Studios and the first new project to move forward at that studio following the announcement of its initial DC Universe (DCU) slate.[3][4] Later in October, Mintz described the film as a "modest character-piece" while comparing the film's action sequences to those in the film The Bourne Ultimatum (2007).[4] In December, DC Studios scheduled the film for a release date of June 30, 2028, while Lynn Harris of 6th & Idaho was also confirmed to be producing.[5]

Marketing

[edit]

Early footage of the film was included in a sizzle reel of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation's slate presented at its LightBox Expo panel at the end of October 2024.[4]

Release

[edit]

Dynamic Duo is scheduled to be theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on June 30, 2028, in IMAX.[5]
