Danny Raz (born 1959; Hebrew: דני רז) is an Israeli computer scientist and a professor at the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. He holds the Hewlett-Packard Chair in Computer Engineering.[1]

Since January 2023, Raz has served as the Dean of the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science at the Technion. His research focuses on applying theoretical analysis to develop practical and efficient tools for network and system management.[2][1]

Academic career

[edit]

Ras holds a B.Sc in Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1988). He then obtained both his M.Sc. (1990) and his Ph.D. (1996) from the Weizmann Institute of Science under the supervision of Prof. David Harel. [3]

Raz was a postdoctoral fellow at the International Computer Science Institute, (ICSI), in Berkeley California during the years 1995-1997.[4]

Raz joined the Faculty of Computer Science at the Technion in 2000 and became an associate professor in 2005. He was promoted to full professor in 2013.[4]

In 2020 he became the incumbent of the Hewlett-Packard Chair in Computer Engineering, and in 2023 Raz was appointed as Dean of the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science at the Technion.[1]

Raz has supervised 30 graduate students and authored over 150 scientific publications and 8 patents.[5]

Research

[edit]

Raz's research focuses on the theory and application of efficient network and system management.[6] His key areas of expertise include: theory of network and system management, resource management in cloud computing, Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networks (SDN), network-aware services and programmable networkstraffic engineering (TE) and network-related optimization problems.[4]

Professional activities

[edit]

Raz was an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management (TNSM), IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking (ToN) and The Journal of Communications and Networks (JCN). He was also a member of the editorial advisory board at The International Journal of Network Management.[7][8][9]

Raz was a visiting scientist at Google, Mountain view, CA and from 2017 he is a visiting scientist at Google, Israel.[10]

In 2014 Raz founded the first branch of Bell Lab in Israel, and was its first director until 2017.[11]
