Cycling Electric was first published in March of 2020 by Dennis Publishing as part of pitch to educate and inspire the steadily growing electric bicycle marketplace. It was co-founded with Mark Sutton and at the time freelance Editor who would later become the full-time steward of the title.
The title began life as a magazine , published twice a year and distributed nationally in the UK with major supermarket retailers and travel hub newsagents. It would be the first solely electric bike dedicated magazine in the UK, though credit must also go to Velo Vision published by Peter Eland earlier that had a tilt toward this content too.
The title has since changed hands as part of a sale from Dennis Publishing to Metropolis Publishing. This London publisher took the title on, developing it to launch the website CyclingElectric.com in February of 2022 with the intention of becoming a one-stop shop for specialist electric bike reviews, buyer's guides, news and inspirational content. At this time Mark Sutton joined as the full time Editor, leaving CyclingIndustry.News, another title he founded seven years earlier.
In 2024 the publisher expanded the title into live events with a debut at the Lee Valley Velopark in March of 2024, closely followed by subsequent events in Bath and, in 2025, Leeds too. These closed circuit events are designed to appeal to potential new cyclists who have never ridden an electric bike or trike and might need some assistance in understanding the product in a safe environment.
Cycling Electric exists alongside road cycling magazine and website Cyclist, which likewise has demo events, though this time pitched at enthusiast road cyclists.
