Draft:Colossal Foundation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Colossal Foundation is an American biotechnology organization,[1] founded in October 2024 for US$50M,[2] by Colossal Biosciences with the Aims to "Save Threatened Species with De-Extinction Science".[3]

The" North Texas-based[4]foundation is known for its current projects that focus on the Northern White Sumatran Rhinos, Red Wolf and Northern Quoll, Ivory Billed Woodpecker, and Pink Pigeonand[5] and Colossal Biovault, a biobank to collect animal genetic materials.[6]

Current projects

[edit]

The foundation aims to develop and use advanced technologies to "address the global extinction crisis". This includes:

  • short-term projects:[7] Supporting initiatives to save endangered species like the Pink Pigeonand, Smatran rhino, and Javan rhino.[5]
  • long-term projects:[8] Employing technological solutions to restore damaged ecosystems and enhance biodiversity.[9]

Science and development

[edit]

The Colossal Foundation aims to achieve its goals through:

  • Technological Innovation: Developing and deploying novel technologies, including gene editing and bioengineering, with the intention of preventing extinction.[10]
  • Partnerships: Collaborating with conservation organizations, research institutions, and local communities to implement effective conservation strategies.[11]
  • Rapid Action: Prioritizing swift and impactful interventions to prevent further species loss.[12]

Activities and history

[edit]
  • Researchers at the University of Melbourne in partnership with the Colossal Foundation will advance conservation efforts to engineer immunity in amphibians, including Australia’s critically endangered Corroboree frog, against a deadly fungal disease.[13]
  • Developing and deploying technological solutions: Investing in research and development of innovative technologies for conservation, such as gene editing for genetic rescue and advanced monitoring tools.[14]
  • The Colossal Biovault collects tissue samples of endangered species in hopes to allow cell lines to become accessible and stored in domestic partner facilities. Its first projects include: Sumatran rhinoceros, vaquita, and ivory-billed woodpecker.[15]
