Chrispas Nyombi

Chrispas Nyombi(born 17 May 1988) is a British-Ugandan academic. He is currently a Professor of International Commercial Law and Director of the Centre for Justice, Law and Society at the University of Derby. A specialist in international investment law, he has been consulted by national and supra-national bodies to negotiate and draft key legal instruments including the Uganda Investment Code Act 2019, Uganda Human Organ Donation and Transplant Act 2023 and the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement and the Investment Protocol. The confidence East African governments repose in his expertise is evidenced by his appointment to negotiate the EAC Investment Policy and Strategy 2019-2024 and enlistment on the World Bank’s International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) Panels of Arbitrators by the Republic of Uganda in 2023.

Early life and education

Nyombi was born in Uganda on 17 May 1988 to Ugandan parents; his mother (Elizabeth Kalyesubula) later settled in the UK. In Uganda, he attended Butenga Nursery School and Nkumba Primary School. In the UK, he was educated at Rokeby School, Canning Town, London; St Angela’s and St Bonaventure's Sixth Form Centre, Forest Gate, London; University of Bradford; University College London; and University of Essex.

Academic career

Nyombi has taught International Investment Law and International Commercial Arbitration as a member of the Faculty of Law at several UK Universities including the University of Derby, University of Hertfordshire, University of Bedfordshire, and Canterbury Christ Church University. He has held visiting appointments at Makerere University, Uganda and University of Juba, South Sudan.

Nyombi is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of African Law.

He is a member of the Society of Legal Scholars.

He is also the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Arbitration Fund for African Students (AFAS).
