Cheryl B. McNeil is a researcher specializing in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). Her work has been foundational to furthering research on the use of PCIT in a variety of populations. Currently, she is professor of psychiatry, licensed psychologist, and researcher at the University of Florida College of Medicine.

Career

[edit]

McNeil earned her BS at Louisiana State University and MS and PhD at University of Florida. She completed her predoctoral internship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in 1989. McNeil started the PCIT program at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center before moving to West Virginia University where she spent 28 years as a faculty member and now holds professor emeritus status.[1] McNeil ran the PCIT lab at West Virginia University[1] before teaching at the University of Florida.[2]

As a Parent-Child Interaction Therapy researcher, McNeil has co-authored seven books and conducted hundreds of studies on the method.[3] Her research includes studies on implementing PCIT,[4][5] and adapting PCIT to new populations, including including autism,[6]  toddlers,[7][8] child maltreatment,[9] older children (ages 7 to 10), home-based wraparound programs,[10] foster children,[11] and dentistry.[12]

McNeil created an adapted version of the PCIT method that is used with teachers and students called Teacher-Child Interaction Training (TCIT).[13] McNeil is a global trainer of PCIT and has implemented it in Norway, New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Turkey, Iran, and South Korea.

McNeil has received grant funding from the National Institute of Health using PCIT and studying pediatric oral healthcare[14] and service delivery in rural Appalachia.[15][16] She served on the editorial board of the International Journal for Behavioral Consultation and Therapy and is an ad hoc reviewer of several journals on child psychology and behavioral disorders.
