Carl Rossow (born May 19, 1971) is an American entrepreneur and innovator in political polling and market research. He is the co-founder and CEO of the Benenson Strategy Group (BSG) and has played a significant role in the development of modern polling techniques and market research methodologies.[1]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Carl Rossow was born in Hartsdale, New York, and raised in Newton, Massachusetts. He attended Newton South High School in the late 1980s before pursuing a bachelor's degree at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he graduated in 1993. While there, he trained at the Social and Demographic Research Institute, focusing on survey methods and demographic research.
Career
[edit]Rossow began his career at PSB Insights (formerly Penn, Schoen, and Berland), where he quickly rose to become Vice President of Operations (1993–2000). At PSB, Rossow collaborated with Mark Penn to establish a state-of-the-art political polling operation. He also contributed to the development of a 24-hour political ad testing methodology and supported campaigns such as Bill Clinton's 1996 presidential campaign.[2]
Benenson Strategy Group
[edit]In 2001, Rossow co-founded the Benenson Strategy Group (BSG) with Joel Benenson. BSG became renowned for its work on major U.S. political campaigns, including Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.[3] Initially serving as Chief Operating Officer, Rossow was appointed CEO in 2023.
Under Rossow’s leadership, BSG diversified its offerings beyond politics, collaborating with Fortune 500 companies and nonprofit organizations. His innovative research methodologies combined data analytics and various data collection methods, positioning BSG as a leader in progressive advocacy issues such as LGBTQ rights, reproductive rights, and minimum wage advocacy.[4]
Other Ventures
[edit]Rossow has founded several other market research firms:
- Innovative Survey Research: Introduced advanced phone polling technology for improved productivity and data quality. Later acquired by a leading research organization.
- iModerate: Co-founded to integrate instant messaging technology with surveys, enabling one-on-one real-time conversations. iModerate was listed on the Inc. 5000 and was eventually acquired.[5]
- GutCheck: Focused on agile market research, developing real-time sampling methodologies for qualitative research. GutCheck was later acquired by Toluna.[6]
Philanthropy and Community Involvement

- Executive board member, Jewish Family Service of Colorado (since 2022)[8]
