CN Chicago Subdivision, built and formerly owned by Illinois Central Railroad, is a section of railway from the 16th Street Junction in Chicago to Kankakee and then to Leverett in Illinois, with a length of 122.6 miles (197.3 km). As a part of the ICRR Main Line from Chicago to New Orleans, this line connects the Champaign Subdivision at its south end and the Freeport Subdivision and St. Charles Air Line at its north end..[1][2] Previously, most southbound trains arrived or departed the Central Station through this line. Nowadays, this line is still busy; passenger services include 3 services of Metra Electric District, South Shore Line, and 3 pairs of Amtrak trains - the Illini, Saluki, and City of New Orleans; freight services are provided by trains going in and out of Homewood station.
This line is now administered by both Chicago Division and Central Division, divided at 61.6 miles (99.1 km)[1][2]. Previously, it was managed by Chicago Terminal Division[3] and Illinois Division[4]

[edit]- 16th Street Junction: through connection with Freeport Subdivision and St. Charles Air Line; at-grade crossing with Rock Island District.
- Grand Crossing: crossing railline of Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway (nowadays Norfolk Southern Railway) under its viaduct. The nearby neighbourhood was named from this crossing.
- Kensington/115th Street station: railline of Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad
- Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad
- North Junction and South Junction: Flying junction with Elsdon Subdivision[5]
- 29.4 miles (47.3 km): railline of Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway
- 55.2 miles (88.8 km): raillines of Norfolk Southern Railway and Kankakee, Beaverville and Southern Railroad
- Gilman: railline of Toledo, Peoria and Western Railway
