Brion Starr (born February 11, 1987) is an American musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. He has released 5 studio albums as well as several non-album singles which span a wide variety of musical genres.[1]

Early Life

[edit]

Born in Neptune Township, NJ he spent formative years in the tri-state area growing up primarily in New York City.

As a teenager, Starr worked at West Village record shop Bleeker Bob’s to which he credits his diverse musical tastes and output.

Career

[edit]

2014-2015: Pre-Solo Work

[edit]

Starr was a session musician and touring guitarist early in his musical career, first hitting the road with synth-pop group Chairlift (band) from 2014 to 2015 followed by a stint with shoegaze songstress Tamaryn from 2015 to 2016 before launching his solo career.[2]

2016-2017: Glam-Punk Era

[edit]

Starr began his solo career forming a band called Noh Starrs. The band featured California psych-rock outfit Froth who originally served as his backing band. They gigged around Los Angeles eventually recording one album in 2016.

In 2017, Starr signed with label Modern Sky, the Noh Starrs album was released August 18th, co-produced by Froth lead singer Joo Joo Ashworth, it also features contributions from Ashworth’s sister Sasami.[3] In September of that year Starr played New York City's Central Park Summer Stage for the Modern Sky Festival. [4]

Starr immediately began work on his second album at Konk Studios in London, England. Starr chose the studio because it is owned by The Kinks lead singer Ray Davies. Starr has cited The Kinks as an influence in multiple interviews.

Global Identity was self-produced and featured contributions from Lida Fox of Cumgirl8 and Robbie Wood of Swim Deep it was released the following year independently before being given an official release by Modern Sky. The album received positive reviews[5] and was accompanied by tours of the US, Europe, and Japan.[6]

2018-2019: Psych-Rock Era

[edit]

Starr and Wood began work on an ambient album which was abandoned due to touring commitments, this work was later incorporated into the follow up record Rope Memories which was also recorded at Konk Studios.

Rope Memories is a ballad heavy psych-rock concept record. The album was released in 2019 and received little attention in the US and Europe. The album did receive positive reviews in Japan which led to another tour of Japan. [7].

During this time the band was picked by Hedi Slimane to perform at the afterparty for the inaugural Celine (brand) S/S 2020 collection in Paris.[8]

The band were also selected by The Chills to open their U.S. tour dates.[9] [10] [11]

2020-2022: Hypnagogic-Pop Era

[edit]

Starr then signed to Swiss record label Taxi Gauche[12] and immediately moved his band into the Château d'Hérouville in Hérouville, France. The Château had previously hosted the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, T-Rex (band), and Pink Floyd all of which were influential to the sessions.[13] The studio shuttered in 1985, Starr was the first musician to record a full album in the Château upon its reopening.[14][15]

Starr returned to New York City where he played the New Colossus Festival, it was the last show before the pandemic shut down venues in the city.[16] He then completed his next album Twenty/Twenty in isolation at his home studio, the album features a more pop oriented sound which genre hops and pays homage to inspirations.[17] The album was released December 31st, 2020.[18]

Once restrictions lifted work began on A Night To Remember, co-produced and mixed by Tony Visconti[19], recorded at the Chateau d’Herouville in France [20] and Visconti’s Human Studios in New York City it was released November 19, 2021.[21] The album was a departure for Starr featuring a heavy dance and funk sound.[22] The album garnered significant attention, especially in France where it was recorded, and was met with generally positive reviews. [23] [24] This lead to tours in the US, UK, EU, and Japan. [25]

A short music video film accompanied the release. Lead single "The Butler” [26] was featured in Christina Burchard’s film Miss Brown. A remix EP was released in 2022 featuring a remix of album track "Same Flame" [27] by Nick Littlemore of Empire Of The Sun (band).

Starr released a series of singles in 2022 including a cover of the Scott Walker song “Duchess” which features Jack Kilmer on guitar. Later In the year he released “Sleepwalking” which features Paz Lenchantin on strings.

2023-present: Continued Work

[edit]

Starr took a hiatus from touring in 2023, preforming sporadically live and solo around New York City. He is currently working on his 6th studio album produced by Tony Visconti. Tracking took place over the summer of 2023 at Visconti Studios in London.[28]
