From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Early Life and Education

Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was born in Serbia.[1] and began his career in publishing in 1984[2], focusing first on science fiction books. He immigrated to South Africa in 1991, where he continued to develop his career in journalism and publishing.

Career Highlights

Brkic co-founded[3] the online news daily Daily Maverick in 2009, serving as its editor-in-chief[4] until he stepped down on 30 October 2024[5][6]. Under his leadership, Daily Maverick has grown significantly[7][8], boasting a readership of approximately 14.5 million unique visitors per month as of March 2023[9]. Prior to this, he launched several publications including Timbila[10], the South African National Parks magazine, and Brainstorm[11], an IT business magazine co-founded with Jovan Regasek in 2001[12][13]. He also founded the print business magazine Maverick in 2005[14][15] and its sister publication Empire in 2007, both of which ceased operations in 2008[16].

In addition to his editorial roles, Brkic is the founder and leader of Project Kontinuum[17][18], a global initiative established in 2024 aimed at reaffirming the positive role of news media [19][20][21][22]within the global community[23][24][25].

Notable Achievements

Brkic received the prestigious Nat Nakasa Award[26] for Media Integrity in 2018[27] for spearheading the GuptaLeaks[28] investigation, which exposed corruption involving the Gupta family and former South African President Jacob Zuma[29]. This investigation was recognized internationally, winning the Global Shining Light Award[30] in 2019[31] alongside Rappler, a Filipino publication founded by Nobel Prize laureate Maria Ressa[32].

Legacy and Impact

Brkic’s work has been influential in shaping independent journalism in South Africa. His commitment[33] to high-quality reporting and investigative journalism[34] has earned him respect within the media community[35]. After stepping down as editor-in-chief of Daily Maverick[36][37], Brkic’s legacy continues through the ongoing impact of the publication and Project Kontinuum[38]
