Augie K Fabela II (born 1966) is an American entrepreneur and business executive. He is the Founder and Chairman of VEON, a Global Digital Operator [1] serving 520 million consumers in their licensed markets, and Founder and Executive Chairman of [FastForward.ai] [2], a company focused on e-commerce-as-a-service. He serves as Chairman of VEON's Board of Directors, Executive Chairman of FastForward.ai, and a Chief of the Chicago Cook County Sheriff in Illinois. He is also an Amazon best-selling author of ["The Impatience Economy"] [3] as well as ["DECIDE"]DECIDE, tactical crisis decision making in law enforcement.

Mr. Fabela, born in Chicago, is the son of Mexicsn and Colombian parents.[1]. He has a wife [2] and a family in Florida [3]

Mr. Fabela is known to have political affinities with the GOP and to support Donald Trump [4]

Education

Mr. Fabela graduated [5] from Stanford University with a Master of Arts (MA) in International Policy Studies (1986–1987) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in International Relations and Affairs (1983–1987).

In addition to his academic background, Mr. Fabela completed training at the NEMRT Police Academy [6] and the Gateway SWAT Operator School, earning certification as a law enforcement officer and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) operator in the State of Illinois.

After graduating from Stanford University, Mr. Fabela spent two years in Tokyo, Japan where he worked [1] for Fujisankei Communications Group, one of the country’s largest media conglomerates.

Mr. Fabela returned to the USA where he together with his father founded a company called Plexsys [7]. Plexsys was engaged in the production of equipment for cellular networks.

In 1991, Augie K Fabela II visited Russia and realized the potential of wireless technology in the country[8]. He was in search of new markets to expand his company Plexsys[9], and he was looking for local experts in the field of advanced radio technology. He contacted Vympel, a research and production association in the defence sector, and met with its management.

In January 1992, Plexsys invited a delegation from Russia, including Dmitry Zimin from Vympel, to the US. Later that year, at the age of 25, Mr. Fabela co-founded VEON (formerly known as VimpelCom) together with Dmitry Zimin [10].

Mr. Fabela served as Chairman of the Board of VEON from 1994 to 2001, leading the IPO of the company to NYSE in 1996 [11]. Mr. Fabela remained as Honorary Chairman of VimpelCom's Board of Directors until 2022. He became VEON's Chairman again in 2011 and served until the end of 2012.

Mr. Fabela rejoined VEON Board as an independent director in June 2022 [12]. Later that year, VEON announced the sale of it's Russian subsidiary, PJSC VimpelCom[13]. In 2023, as VEON board member, Mr. Fabela visited Ukraine and VEON's local subsidiary, Kyivstar amid Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2023[14] and 2024[15]. Mr. Fabela also attended Yalta European Strategy conference in 2024 [16].

As of April 2024, Mr. Fabela was serving [17] as the Chairman of VEON's board of directors and Executive Chairman of the board at FastFowrard.ai [18], he was also holding the title of Chairman Emeritus at VimpelCom Ltd.

Augie K Fabela II is World Economic Forum [19] contributor with topics spanning Sustainable start-ups [20], principles of entrepreneurship [21] digital divide [22], etc.

Law Enforcement Career

In 2010, Augie became a certified police officer in Chicago, his birthplace, graduating from the police academy at the age of 44.

In 2011-2023, Mr. Fabela served as Commander, Special Operations in Homicide Task Force at Police aviation in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois [17].

As of 2024, he continues to serve at Chicago Cook County Sheriff’s Office as Chief - Special Assistant to the Sheriff at Sheriff's Department [23] in Cook County, Illinois
