Dr. Antonella Santuccione Chadha (*1974) is a medical doctor and neuroscientist specialized in clinical pathology, and expert in neurological and psychiatric disorders as well as sex and gender precision medicine. She is the founder and pro bono CEO of the Women’s Brain Foundation (formerly Women’s Brain Project Association), an international non-profit organization dedicated to investigating sex- and gender-specific differences in the brain and their impact on the prevalence and progression of psychiatric as well as neurological disorders.[1] [2] Additionally, she is the Vice President and Board Member of Euresearch, a Swiss organization that supports research and innovation projects across Europe. [3] Dr. Santuccione Chadha also advises several start-ups focused on advancing the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders, contributing to the progress of precision medicine and making effective treatments more accessible. [1]
Personal Life
[edit]Antonella Santuccione Chadha grew up in a small village in the Abruzzo region of Italy. She spent her childhood on her grandparents’ farm, as her parents —a teacher and a police officer— were often away due to their professions. She now resides in Thalwil, near Lake Zurich, with her husband and two sons. She is particularly committed to researching sex and gender differences in medicine, which led her to establish the Women’s Brain Foundation. [2]
Professional Career
[edit]Dr. Antonella Santuccione Chadha completed her medical studies with distinction in 1999 at the Gabriele d'Annunzio University Chieti (https://en.unich.it/) in Italy. After completing her doctoral thesis at the University Hospital in Chieti and the Institute of Medical Statistics, she interned at the European Commission (Brussels, Belgium). [1] She subsequently worked as a resident doctor in clinical pathology at the University Hospital Chieti.
In 2001, she began her postdoctoral research at the Center for Molecular Neurobiology at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany. Her career also included postdoctoral fellowships at the Institute of the University Hospital Siena in Italy and the Institute for Clinical Pathology at the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland.[4] [5]
From 2006 to 2012, Dr. Santuccione Chadha led the neurobiology research group at the psychogeriatric unit of the University Hospital Zurich, focusing on dementia, schizophrenia, depression, psychosis, and substance abuse. During this time, she was supervised by Professor Dr. Christoph Hock and Professor Dr. Nitsch, pioneers in neuroimmunology and discoverers of Aducanumab.[6] In this role, she led a team of doctoral students, technicians, and nurses. During this period, she also completed various training courses and clinical studies in Good Clinical Practice (Zurich, Switzerland), advanced training in Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy (Munich, Germany), and advanced training in clinical research study management (Zurich, Switzerland). [7]
In 2012, Antonella Santuccione Chadha joined Roche in Grenzach-Wyhlen (Germany) as a Medical Manager for Psychiatry. Alongside her work at Roche, she served as a consultant at the Lausanne Dialogue Workshops, a global initiative for Alzheimer's disease.[8] From 2014 to June 2018, she worked as a clinical expert for psychiatric and neurological disorders at Swissmedic (Bern, Switzerland).[7] During this time, she founded the Women’s Brain Foundation and served on the ROADMAP expert advisory board. [9]
Dr. Santuccione Chadha returned to Roche in 2018 as a Director in the medical department for Alzheimer’s disease (partnership and biomarkers). [7] During the COVID-19 pandemic, she offered pro bono support to the regional government in Abruzzo, Italy, for crisis management. [2] From 2020 to 2022, she led the Alzheimer's disease division (Stakeholder Engagement for Alzheimer’s) at Biogen (Baar, Switzerland). Since 2021, she has served as Vice President and a member at Euresearch (www.euresearch.ch). [1] In 2022, she became Chief Medical Officer at Altoida (www.altoida.com), a U.S.-based neurocognitive assessment platform, and in 2023, she was appointed CEO.[1] As of 2024, she advises BottneuroAG (www.bottneuro.ch) and ReconnectLab AG (www.reconnect-labs.com). [10] [11]
Antonella Santuccione Chadha is the author of numerous scientific publications. Her current research interest focuses on the influence of sex and gender factors on psychiatric disorders and their consideration in diagnostic and treatment solutions, a goal she pursues through her foundation, the Women’s Brain Foundation. [7]
Women’s Brain Foundation (formerly “Women’s Brain Project”)
[edit]The Women’s Brain Foundation (WBF) is an international non-profit organization headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, that unites a global team of scientists from various disciplines. Founded in 2016, the foundation seeks to establish the first research institute for sex- and gender-specific precision medicine in Switzerland. The idea arose during Chadha's work at Swissmedic, where she observed that eight out of ten medications withdrawn from the market were due to fatal side effects in women.[1]
The foundation focuses on applying sex and gender in precision medicine, spanning from basic research to new technologies. It supports and promotes research on sex- and gender differences with the goal of advancing precision medicine and accelerating innovations in women's health. While its primary focus is on brain disorders, the foundation’s initiatives extend to other areas of women’s health. The WBF gained international recognition for its research on sex-specific differences in Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that disproportionately affects women. [1]
- Promoting sex and gender-specific research: The WBF advocates for a stronger consideration of sex and gender in biomedical research to develop personalized treatment approaches.
- Education: The organization aims to raise awareness of the importance of sex and gender-specific differences in brain health.
- Advancing precision medicine: By integrating sex and gender-specific data, the foundation seeks to enable tailored prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Collaboration: Promoting interdisciplinary exchange between scientists, clinicians, and policymakers.
Key Topics
[edit]- Sex and gender differences in neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, stroke, and multiple sclerosis.
- Women and mental health, particularly depressive (inkl. postpartum depression) and anxiety disorders.
- The influence of hormones and life phases (e.g., menopause, pregnancy) on brain health.
