Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital located in the Central Region of Ghana, the hospital provides specialist Psychiatric services as well as the general outpatient services.[1][2] The Hospital provided a free psychiatric care for the former National Science and Maths Quiz 'shark', "Dr" Ninwie Leonard Lanyeli.[3]
History
[edit]Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital was established by Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1965. The hospital provides specialist Psychiatric services as well as general outpatient services to the public and neighboring states.
The facility was officially earmarked as a 500 bedded hospital but due to imminent hosting by Ghana of the Organisation of Africa Unity (O.A.U) conference in May 1965, patients on rehabilitation at Accra Psychiatric Hospital and Adomi in the Eastern Region were rounded up and quickly dumped into the uncompleted structures at Ankaful. This was the humble beginning of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital. The hospital has eleven wards, but only seven are operational.[4]
The hospital embarked on renovation exercise, which made them proceed with plans to put all the female patients into one ward, despite advice from the nurses. The 500-bed mental hospital was originally designed to have three wards, one for males, one for females, and separate wards for younger and geriatric patients.[5]
Support
[edit]The Enterprise Group refurbished the Male Block of the hospital at an estimated cost of GHS 2 Million. The refurbished Male Block comes with five wards, a conference room, a nurses’ station, pantry, dining hall, treatment room, provision room and washrooms. The refurbishment is part of the Enterprise Group's commitment to sustainable healthcare for all.[6][7]
The 1994 Year Group of Wesley Girls’ High School also renovated a ward at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital. The year group mobilized monies gained from fundraising activities they undertook. The group also donated 20 pieces of mattresses to the hospital to support the care of the patients.[8][9]
